I would say both [Mandarin] and Swedish tone are prosodic in that they're both suprasegmental phonological phenomena. Plus Swedish tone is phonemic! (as in [Mandarin]) One main difference is in how many syllables per word bear a tone (Swedish, Japanese, etc. < Mandarin, Vietnamese, etc.)

Out now in Neuroscience & Biobehavioral Reviews!

When studying language in the brain, we often look for things that can be model systems for language (songbirds, artificial grammars, etc.). Here, we flip this on its head and argue that language itself is an excellent model system for cognition 🗣️🧏‍♀️🧠

We are excited to introduce GeoGraphica! Our new article type that puts maps and visual storytelling at the center. Since "The Netherlands in Maps" ended in 2016, we’ve lacked a home for cartographic creativity. GeoGraphica brings it back. Geography, seen as well as read. More coming soon!

On 3 April I will be presenting Bye Bye I Love You at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics in Nijmegen, 15-16:00. Books will be available if you tell me by 20 March that you want a copy.

The book was in many ways born there, so this return is significant!

Well this kind of worked. The auto exposure and tracking freaked out a bit around totality, but mostly it was better than I expected.

Researchers in the Faculty of Environment have created a toolkit to support fieldworkers to make sure they plan with and for LGBTQ+ colleagues.
