For some reason I'm reminded of this.

"We're an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And while you're studying that reality—judiciously, as you will—we'll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that's how things will sort out."

After the Cold War, the US itself closed or sharply downsized many military facilities in Greenland, including Sondrestrom Air Base and early-warning radar sites. Denmark remained a loyal ally, and did not object to US presence. Claims of Danish security neglect are fallacious.

Few thoughts on the Greenland saga, summarized in a short thread. Some of these points have already sparked debate on X, but after Miller’s speech, I am even more convinced. 🧵Thread

1/ First and foremost, Denmark is not only a member of the EU, but also a founding member of NATO.

Those calling for Europe to "wake up" need to outline a plan. What does it mean for Europe to "wake up." I think Europe is very much awake. But it doesn't know where it should go. There's just a brain death default to more defense spending.

Big reforms are needed on defense and foreign policy 1/

Stephen Miller is Trump’s most important and influential aide because he channels and shares the president’s worldview. His cold-blooded assessment that might makes right is the one immutable law of history and is now the guiding concept behind US foreign policy…

The brazen US action on Venezuela should make us reassess the Trump regime's likely future behaviour. Especially coupled with subsequent remarks on Greenland, it seems unlikely that the US can in any sense be considered a reliable NATO ally any longer, no matter how often we call Trump 'Daddy'. 1/5
It's wild that the PM of a NATO member feels compelled to put out a statement like this vis-à-vis the US government.

The U.S. State Department really crossed the line this time. I expect reciprocal measures against those behind this blatant affront to EU sovereignty. With friends like these who needs enemies.

So, a thread follows. I'm no Americanist; this is mostly just thinking out loud.
