Spot on from @stephenkb.bsky.social. And the other aspect of this nasty turn is the eliding of British ‘culture’ with ‘white British’, which will shock anyone who has watched TV or football, or listened to music, or read a book, or indeed breathed since 1980.

In the early 2010s it was infuriating to see endless screeds on "legitimate concerns" against East Europeans from analysts and scholars who seemed oblivious to how the moment political leaders capitulated to this xenophobia it would just lead to escalating hatemongering against other diasporas

It was inevitable that “too many people speaking Polish” Brexitism would become outright “too many brown people”

And it’s what people like Gove, David Davis and Johnson enabled

There are few words that truly encapsulate the party conference experience. For attendees, they are a heady mix of people, panels and parties. For politicians, they are a crucial moment in the politic...

We all need to be prepared this week for when on Friday Donald Trump — much to his complete and total surprise — doesn’t actually get the Nobel Peace Prize and he loses his mind.

This lurid headline is about British tourists no longer getting away with overstaying in Schengen. Or being 'illegals', as it's often called in the UK.

‘Populists (like Trump and his acolyte Farage) exploit the anger and frustration of declining working classes for their own benefit and that of selfish plutocrats’. But Starmer, with his flag waving nostalgia, should also note that you cannot step into the same river twice

A reminder that this week the Conservatives announced they want a “British ICE”
johnpfaff.bsky.social
Um, ICE just coldly shot an unarmed PRIEST in the head w a pepper ball when he (and everyone around him) clearly posed no threat.

For the crime of … complaining about government policy.

That poses a lot of questions

Whoever that person is they have laid the Govt open to criticism of not treating all UK citizens abroad the same, of making judgements about them

It undermines the process we pay a lot of money to uphold of having embassies etc abroad to support UK passport holders

It speaks volumes that a No 10 spokesperson wasn’t able instinctively to say something about seeking access and providing consular services to British citizens detained overseas.

Now imagine substituting certain other countries for Israel and being told ‘it’s a matter for that government’.

The UAE is an authoritarian autocracy, a petro-state with no income tax for citizens, to bribe them for the lack of democratic voice or free speech

It is 85% migrant, a segregated society with a ban on integration in principle and practice, few rights, equal opportunities, nor voice for incomers

been reading about the glorious revolution and it’s funny that this event that looms so large in the history of British parliamentary govt and thus world liberal democracy was straightforwardly the Dutch doing a regime change as part of their geopolitical struggle against France
