I'm becoming more and more convinced that we need a different system for teaching math, where students move through the content based on mastery, not time.

I've said this a lot in recent essays but not as often here: Yes, we're witnessing the expansion and entrenchment of a police state in the US. But unlike the vast majority of concentration camp regimes I've studied, most Americans still have countless opportunities to resist. We can stop it.

Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

I am constantly telling my science and math students this, about ChatGPT, getting answers from friends, googling, listening to me lecture without engaging, whatever. I even bring a dumbbell to demonstrate.

I am surrounded by people who are outsourcing their own thinking to ChatGPT and they are quickly and obviously becoming dependent on it for even the most banal tasks. Once again, the "figuring it out" is the important part. Yes, you can use a crane to lift weights but you will not get stronger

I extremely don't care if an undocumented person is law abiding or not. They still deserve due process.

If you like eating, support the people who grow your food. (Also because, you know, fellow humans. But it's especially stupid to harass the people feeding you.)
We feed you.

More than anything, I think this speaks to the impoverished view of the role of government. The idea of organizing collective support and aid to solve overwhelming problems is reclassified as akin to some sort of dealer-addict relationship.
President Trump said that his administration plans to “wean” states off FEMA assistance after this year’s hurricane season, offering in the most explicit terms yet his plans for states to respond to natural disasters and other emergencies on their own.
Trump says governors should be able to handle disasters without FEMA
In remarks to reporters, the president said the administration plans to “wean” states off FEMA assistance after hurricane season ends.

That first sentence is gold, thanks!
Be ready to sacrifice precision for clarity, but never accuracy.

Simplifying science for a general audience necessarily means leaving out details that are important to scientists but not to the reader or the story. This is the toughest when writing about the subjects nearest to one's heart!

The chest x-ray use pioneered by Alan Hart continues to be extremely important in screening for tuberculosis. Although no one accomplishes anything in isolation, I'd argue that Hart has helped saved MILLIONS of lives because chest x-rays have been so essential in driving down rates of TB globally.
Remembering Dr. Alan Hart for Pride, trans man from the early 1900s. He revolutionized the detection of tuberculosis, saved thousands of lives, and died using his name, as the man he always was meant to be.

We have always been here.
