I think a big part of it -- theatrically embracing obvious falsehoods -- is mocking liberals, mocking people who value principles (like honesty) above factional advantage. They do it because it pains us, because we care.
What's striking about Trump's lies, and those of his apologists, is that they're not even plausible. They don't try to be plausible. As others have noted, that's kind of the point. True authoritarian control and power is telling a blatant and obvious lie, and showing you can get away with it.
Q: Can you explain what's going on with the bandages on Trump's hand?

LEAVITT: We've given you an explanation. The president is literally constantly shaking hands.

Explaining the other day that the moral puzzle about universal health care is not why poor people get it, but why richer people do. The answer from Beveridge, the Liberal (not Socialist) who recommended the NHS is economic efficiency. Universal healthcare removes huge transaction costs.

The indisputable facts are that homicide rates in Baltimore and Chicago are dropping, not due to more cop violence and shootings of Black youth, but because both cities finally have mayors that listen to what Black civil rights leaders and violence prevention experts have been saying since the 60s.

Fiddler on the roof, but with ICE agents playing the part of Cossacks. I know people think of Fiddler as a heartwarming story about a funny man doing Ya-ba-dibba-dibbas, but it's literally about pogroms like this
Masked men wearing ICE vests—but who refused to present a warrant or identify themselves—roped off a construction site, trapping two men on a roof for hours in subzero temps. Protesters gathered. Masked men eventually left, and one man on the roof was taken away by ambulance kstp.com/kstp-news/to...

The hero who disarmed one of the terrorists in Sydney turned out to be 43-year-old Ahmed al-Ahmed — a fruit shop owner and father of two.

He was shot twice and is currently in hospital. He is scheduled to undergo surgery.

He had no experience with weapons of any kind.

It was interesting to watch the FOXNews meltdown down last night after a socialist was elected mayor of New York.

Especially since Trump is literally engaging in socialistic policies/practices.

So heartwarming to see such support from Mainers for each other. #Maine #SomaliCommunity #MEpolitics
Last week, President Trump called our Somali neighbors “garbage”. This kind of xenophobic and racist rhetoric has no place in America and no place in Maine.

Today I attended the Rally Behind our Somali Community to show Mainers that all are welcome here and we will not cow to fear or hate.
