Of all the competitive authoritarian developments of the past year I think the fall of CBS News is among the most chilling. That this can happen to easily and so quickly freaks me the fuck out.
Nightmarish. CBS News is now running straight state propaganda. They handed Hegseth all three segments and are now tweeting flattering sound bites.

Gonna need Hunter Yurachek to (fail to) explain why BYU's loss yesterday affected their ranking, but Alabama's loss yesterday didn't.

If you call it a “male immaturity epidemic,” a very different set of phenomena come into focus, as this thread shows
I'm starting to wonder how much "the male loneliness epidemic" is just straight and bisexual women identifying low-effort, mean, and incompetent men and choosing not to date, marry, and tolerate them anymore

I think I find the idea of watching the ESPN playoff selection show even grosser than the World Cup draw. At least the latter has a pile of unintentional comedy. The former is just a pile of overly serious people trying to impose a patina of logic on a political process.

The thing regular people don’t often grasp about ‘academic freedom’ is that if you don’t allow experts to research & teach in their fields of expertise, guided by their professional judgment & decades of training, you have effectively given up on the concept of knowledge & shut down your university
Universities are moving rapidly to comply with laws that don't exist.
“I’m emotionally shellshocked right now,” said one professor in the Texas Tech system. “What does it say about academic freedom? It says we don’t have it.” The professor spoke by phone from the inside of a car to avoid being overheard by colleagues.

this is so funny to me, Clemson got a 6'8 guy from the basketball team to play tight end and he literally doesn't even run routes, he doesn't try to get open, he just runs into the end zone, gets post position, boxes out, and calls for the ball

CNN has a panel talking about Epstein and the host just mentioned (almost as an aside!) that one of the guys is a lawyer defending Ghislaine Maxwell. And rather than being a guest who's grilled about the case, he's treated like any other panelist who just happens to be minimizing the crimes.

The president of the United States just declared war, actual military war, not a metaphorical one, on a major American city, and one governed by his political opponents.

In any other period, this would be impeachment-worthy.

one of the stranger phenomena in American life is that hate is supposed to flow in one direction (rural people get to hate urban people, Republicans get to hate Democrats) and if the hate goes the other way people pretend as if this is very upsetting.
The media made a HUGE deal out of "basket of deplorables" and "cling to their guns or religion."

But, of course, it will totally ignore Trump saying he hates Democrats: "I hate them. I believe they hate their country."
in addition to his "shylocks" comment, i can't imagine the media backlash if Biden said anything like from this screenshot - that he "hates Republicans" - and i'm also tired of having this "IMAGINE IF BIDEN!" thought experiment but it's just a constant reminder of the double standards

When JD Vance says he’d eagerly make the United States poorer, weaker, unhealthier, and less free if it means he’ll see fewer brown people around and get to enjoy image of cruelty against them, I believe him.

If anything, it’s weird and disturbing that so many still do not.
