Federal officers are firing so much tear gas at protesters outside an ICE facility in Broadview, Illinois, that some nearby community members who aren’t even protesting are struggling to breathe when they leave their homes to run errands.
ICE is hounding Chicago area locals with excessive chemical munitions
Agents are firing tear gas and pepper balls on lawful protesters, lawsuits say, sickening even uninvolved residents.

I figured there was a reason why it seems almost every project has avoided implementing it so far

an interesting note re: scaling image moderation. in the past 24 hours:

at least 500 thousand images in posts (not considering # of images, just if an image was in the post)
86 thousand avatars
500 thousand url thumbnails
58 thousand videos.

that's a lot to moderate!

The day the world learns the difference between general machine learning models and generative AI is the day the world starts to heal

bluesky decentralization in action:

- bluesky the corp bans a user
- user’s data is alive on their blacksky PDS, an indie server
- blacksky will deploy their own API server which will bring back the user to everyone else
- user keeps their data, identity, followers. nothing is lost

TL; DR
In the next 5 business days you should be able to go to Link's page on blacksky.community and see his posts and he'll be able to post but people using the bsky mobile apps won't see it.
After that we'll get Blacksky-only posts up.
After that we can talk about purging bsky mod tools

I hear and see your concerns. Over the weekend, a couple users hosted on Blacksky's PDS were banned from the Bluesky app and thus the Bluesky API servers. This was a weakness of our system I've been aware of and hoped we had more time to address before any kind of public incident. 1/11

I love taking notes on reviews on Obsidian because they almost always show up like this on my graph. So many new connections to make!!

Even then, it would probably not be enough unfortunately.

There are plenty of reasons to hate AI but can we all get straight that an AI "feature" on a site doesn't mean they're training on that site's data.

Because they're training on all the data everywhere, AI features or no.

Hive provides genAI services, but Bsky has no stake in that part of the company and there is no financial incentive for them to provide the data themselves. If Hive, or any company, wants to scrape the entirety of Bsky like any other site, they can. I can't find it in me to be mad about this anymore

I genuinely don't think I would do anything different from what Bluesky is doing right now, realistically. They seem to be operating in the most ethical way possible. Even working on implementing broad robots.txt-like user intent flags on content (see below). What else can be done?

I don't know. Everywhere in the surface web is already being scraped for generative AI models. Bsky has said they won't use it for generative AI, but are understandably using media posted to their own servers to improve moderation. I've yet to find reason to distrust them

You can't be mad that the false positive rate is high and simultaneously be against training ML algorithms. Those two are mutually exclusive. Using ML detection tools like Hive is the only way to scale up moderation of heinous content to platforms with millions of users.
