We had a Dymo labelmaker when I was a kid. You turned the dial and squeezed the trigger to emboss each letter onto sticky tape. I swear to god this held such ongoing fascination for me that I feel sorry for kids who only have cell phones

Getting one of these things as a kid made me almost understand the Victorian compulsion to name and classify every species and variety of animal and vegetable and mineral on earth. The Home Labelmaker in hand was nothing less than a gleaming sword of taxonomy, all must bow down and be Marked.

I’m getting the gang together and teaching journalists and at-risk people how to get out of handcuffs, plexicuffs, rope, and duct tape. I teach a basic urban escape and evasion class for LGBTQ+ and women every couple of years with the stuff I know. I’m no expert, but I’m field tested!
