Funny because I was just watching this interview with Baldwin talking about how, as he grows older, he knows less and less about human nature and how it is a "great relief." I hear that loud and clear.

minor bugbear but I'm starting to get annoyed by the "know who was antifa? Winston Churchill (or whoever)" meme.

The opposition to fascism at the street level didn't come from national figures / armed forces. It came from motivated usually left wing groups working with the people who lived there.

I am not a big Bond fan but I realize I have probably seen almost all if not all of the movies willingly. Casino Royale was the introduction of the Craig era and was pretty good AFAIC, and I do not regret seeing all of the Craig era bond movies. Was rooting for Idris Elba to get it next, but meh.

But to be more specific about distancing with friends: there is a guy I do not trust any more. I could tell him that, but I have not. I could stop communicating with him, but I don't. I am bland. He could go off, but I can't help that and do not want to trigger it. That's an example of buffer zone.

Absolutely. I have gone out on limbs with people and maybe just been lucky, but I go out furthest with people I love so much I would be helpless in front of anyway. Believe me, this is not advice or recommendation, just where I have found myself lately, and I have generally been rewarded. YMMV

Breaking my sworn vow but:

I don't know what is better. But if I realize I have made a mistake I stop the bleeding (i.e. get real bland) and try to keep them on side if I can for as long as I can.

Anyway, this is not about people I truly love, there are even fewer of those and they could kill me.

OK I swear this is my last reply on this but I am feeling everything here. I have not quite cut off but slowly distanced myself from people who I started to think might weaponize shit in a falling out years later, you cannot un-ring the bell of what they know but you can increase the buffer zone.

True. I think about this a lot, especially this year. The ones I trust have given me things I could fuck them up with. I have given them the same. We haven't fucked each other up with them.
