As with everything: make these programs universally free. If you are deeply concerned that rich people are getting access to universal government programs, then tax their incomes or assets.
A family where both parents earn 99k get 30 “free” childcare hours a week and a family where one parent is on minimum wage and one earns 100k get no “free” childcare hours at all. It’s a dumb system and I imagine most high earners game it in some way.

This thread collating the Sheffield Tribune’s brilliant investigation into the spivvy lawyer threatening Yorkshire leaseholders into handing over cash is worth reading before the story goes national.
Excellent and courageous investigative journalism.
The fact that it is (apparently) legal to do this to people is utterly disgusting.
“It broke my heart, that was my savings towards a new car,” one woman who paid Milne tens of thousands of pounds told us. “He has just wiped me out.”

Who is Andrew Milne - the solicitor sending "very aggressive" letters to Sheffield homeowners?

Well done Lord Dubs 4 sticking up 4 refugees! A truly fabulous person! He is so right when he says the current cruel policy that Shabana Mahmood is suggesting is not fit 4 purpose! I find it astonishing that the cruelest of people in parliament are the very people who come from immigrant families!

I've been out canvassing quite a lot in London lately. Labour's vote has absolutely evaporated.... it is quite extraordinary to go to places where Labour were on 50-60% of the vote at the last locals and find nobody, or virtually nobody, supporting them.

No. Exactly the opposite. By obsessing on this issue and appeasing Farage, Labour’s making a Reform government much more likely. The issue needs confronting, challenging, and opposing, not appeasing. Appeasement *never* works.

How ironic that Mahmood, herself, wouldn’t be here if those rules had applied when her parents came here.

Refuge isn’t weakness. It’s an investment. And the returns are human, immeasurable, and generational.

Britain once understood that. It can again.

I came to this country as a child refugee. No English, no certainty, no idea what my life could become. Britain gave me refuge.

Not on a timer, not with conditions attached, but with a chance to grow roots.
