Denying help to the poor is rejection of God, Pope Leo says on Christmas Eve
"On Earth, there is no room for God if there is no room for the human person. To refuse one is to refuse the other," said the pope said, lamenting lack of care for children, the poor and immigrants.

Love this (successful development of ecosystems including insects in urban spaces). The new George St is a much nicer space than what it replaced.
Dunedin's inner-city greening project shows even small spaces can be wildlife havens
Even small green spaces can bring nature back into cities, as our project in Ōtepoti Dunedin has shown.

Massive ego - hard to believe that Coster would see this as helpful to anyone’s trust in police!
📢 In an interview with Q+A, the former police commissioner spoke for the first time since the damning IPCA report on the McSkimming scandal.
Exclusive: Coster claims Hipkins and Mitchell told about McSkimming

Local elections: At least three districts exclude Māori ward candidates' profiles
A Local Government New Zealand committee says the omission is disappointing and concerning, especially given the referendum on Māori Wards.

What a way to try and suppress critical thinking! People are smarter than this.
They are removing art history from the senior school curriculum. The 2 years of art history I did in the 90s are literally the knowledge I use the most in my everyday life, my career, & for joy.

I appreciate David Fisher's reporting on this - but the sub ed needs to be told there's no question mark needed in this headline.

Fisher gives us multiple clear cut eg's of how sexism & patriarchal culture actually works 🧵

Elections can’t come soon enough!
This is the attitude, from civic leaders, that gives people social license to comment on FB posts abt my accident celebrating that I got hurt. This is the attitude that encourages those who pass folks on bikes too close, are cavalier w our safety, oppose investment in safe infra. Not OK.

This morning, Govt members on the F&E Committee voted down every attempt by Te Pāti Māori to extend the submission deadline or retain the standard six-month review process. They have instead locked in a shortened four-month timeframe and a hard deadline of 23 June 2025.

Hipkins is blowing it again. The injustice of the Privileges Committee recommendation does affect all of us. It’s not politicians talking about themselves. I want Labour standing up with a strong stance against injustice today, not brushing it under the carpet as ‘politician stuff’ #nzpol

There's something incredibly patronising and dismissive in Nicola Willis describing slashing the operating budget by almost half as "there will be no lolly scramble"

Just monstrous language to describe austerity measures that are social murder.

I'm not loving most of the AI tools (so much noise, arghh) but my feeling is the only way we can win is by pushing to build it well (eg much more regulation, human rights protection, environmental protection, "less is more" approach
