A reminder that ‘knowing’ is not binary, it's not an on/off thing. We move through stages; hearing, recognising, recalling, mastering, before knowledge becomes truly usable. This example of of children's different phrases of 'knowing' words from Beck, McKeown, and Kucan is so useful

Very much this. Bear in mind that independent schools cite ‘dyslexia’ and ‘special needs’ as justification for 25% of their students having exam access arrangements. Even the teachers know it’s gamed.

So yes, autonomy is important, but it's much less important imo than learning and mastering a set series of basic tools and skills, which requires directive and authoritative feedback and training.

I guess the most important rule is "children are not guinea pigs"
These are good rules and unfortunately very few of them are being followed at the moment. The use of AI to directly tutor children is one of the education crimes of the century.
Adam's rules for using AI in edtech products:
1. It is low stakes: given AI's propensity to get things wrong, you can't use it where the consequences of getting something wrong are high (unless there has been extremely rigorous testing).

It seems like cybernetics. It's not necessarily true that trees need wind, but probably true they develop differently in environments with varying wind. Organism adapting to fit their environment. But, adaptation to stress in humans will have varying outputs, good or bad. Biology is complex.

What can the science of learning do for teachers? It can help us overcome biases: how we *think* we learn and how we *actually* learn are often very different. This also applies to instruction: the approaches which might appear to work in the short term often do not lead to long term gains.

When we talk about the science of learning, we're talking about a subset of interrelated fields involving neuroscience, cognitive science and education psychology. Mayer's distinction between the 3 elements of learning, instruction and assessment in "educationally relevant settings" are very helpful
