Climate advocates lost some political battles in North America last year, but technology and economics are winning the war everywhere else.

2026 will make the inevitability of the energy transition even more difficult to ignore.

How to (still) be a climate optimist
2025 was a year defined by climate policy retreats in North America — and climate technology expansion in the rest of the world. Good news: Nothing stops this train.

“If you care about the bottom line, budgets & taxes, then you should care about urban biking, because it’s a money saver. It’s ironic when so-called fiscal conservatives attack biking, when their efforts just show a lack of understanding of math.” My interview with @modacitylife.com #CityMakingMath
Opinion: Why more urban cycling saves everyone money | Urbanized
The resulting benefits of a ‘car-less’ household are myriad, but few are as quantifiable as the money most people sink into a depreciating asset that sits unused for 95% of the time.

Misinformation *is* central to democratic problems today, but the solution is *not* to correct such epistemic failures directly. Instead, we must address them at their roots, in social identity.

Or so I argue in a new post for @apaphilosophy.bsky.social.

It's obvious that Ford and Sakaria are using bike lanes to divide Ontarians & distract from some pretty monumental f-ups in Ontario. Instead of uniting us & using his mandate to build a better province, he's playing politics with peoples lives (of course not just people on bikes).

Remember, whenever you hear that “speed wasn’t a factor” in a deadly crash, what they mean is that the car involved wasn’t technically speeding. At least “not by much.” It presumes that the speed limit wasn’t too high to begin with.

When it comes to death from collisions, SPEED IS ALWAYS a factor.

As our kids go #BackToSchool, never forget that we ARE the traffic that we’re afraid of. If more kids walked, biked or rode transit to school, it would erase a massive number of car trips each day, and our kids would be safer, healthier and better at school. HT Ian Lockwood.

“The 85th percentile should not be the Holy Grail or the Bible.” but that’s how speed limits are still set, by clocking how fast the 15th-fastest car out of 100 is going, and rounding up.

It's junk science and it’s helped normalize the deadliest roads in the developed world.
States rethink a long-held practice of setting speed limits based on how fast drivers travel
Road safety activists and some states are pushing to depart from a longstanding rule that sets speed limits in the United States based largely on how fast drivers actually travel.
