Anyone in Bend know some people in California who might be willing to call? No one here has any California connections... right? 🤔

Rumor is that Gavin Newsom is wavering on housing and might veto SB 79. If you live in California, please reach out to the governor’s office today: cayimby.org/call-sb-79/

It's time to remember the people we've seen forced out of their homes because of the high cost of living here.

This Monday, the 6th, at 6pm, at Bevel Brewing. Let's pour one out for those who have been forced to move away.

Pew finds something that everybody in codes and standards knows but few will say out loud: we apply far stricter fire safety standards to apartments than to houses. www.pew.org/en/research-...

Great to see the work @davidwelton.bsky.social and @bendyimby.bsky.social have been doing for a while to get more small-scale commercial into neighborhoods be recognized in the Bulletin as a solution to a common criticism for how communities are developed.

Next meetup:

Ian and @jheylin.bsky.social just got back from @yimbytown.bsky.social in New Haven, and are going to lead a discussion about what they learned, who they met and what's happening in other places. Should be really interesting!

Paris now has 300+ school streets. How many does your city have?

Not to be depressing, but....at least we can make them happen. Here is a tool to use.

Depends on a ton of factors and even in a perfect environment with a high end rifle the shooter makes all the difference. It’s a very precise process and being off the mark by a tiny fraction results in a miss, especially on shots longer than 50 yards.

Fittingly, the YIMBYtown express* leaves DC passing through NoMa, the YIMBYest neighborhood in the US.

What happens in the California housing market doesn't stay there, so in Oregon we're really grateful for this effort from our friends in California

This is not true. Blackstone owns 0.06% of the single family homes in America. There is no market where they own more than 1% of the homes.

Nobody has a monopoly on housing. 2/3 of American households own their homes and rental housing is a VERY diversified and competitive industry.
Pie chart showing that all institutional investors combined own less than 1% of the single family housing stock.

the real glory of world war two was that it involved a warrior cult being ground down and beaten to a pulp by people who would rather have been doing something else.

Another thing about YIMBYtown is that each year it's organized by the advocates who are doing the actual work at the state and local level.

I think it's going to be great! One reason I have much higher hopes for YIMBYtown than Abundance Conference is I'll actually be moderating a panel at the former about how left-YIMBYs should respond to incipient fascism.

I've been a pretty consistent proponent of a progressive abundance agenda, so it's pretty dismaying to see the Abundance Conference bending over backwards to try and bring outright racists and fascists into the tent.

Single stair code reform is on our doorstep. The expected pushback is coming from the fire bureau. What’s your best response to their argument?

I do think showing up to City Council meetings with those photos and saying "the French figured out how to do this and you're telling me you can't?" Would work in a lot places tbqh

According to the City of Paris, in the last 10 years 150K trees have been planted & 45ha of parks created in the already hot city, all intended to not only improve quality-of-life today, but also help the city adapt to & manage summer heatwaves of 50℃ (122F) by 2050.

Just the start.

Common sense.
