This seems like a pretty major problem. It’s understandable that not all specimens can be pinned and permanently stored, but this is yet another reason GBIF data is becoming less and less reliable. 🧪🐝

must resist the urge to despair. I have now photographed and digitized my entire collection of georeferenced Florida Clam Shrimp, no AI involved whatsoever, 100% trustworthy handcrafted artisanal dataset. Apparently about half of the Eulimnadia records on gbif (globally) are now mine. shimp

Oh my god that’s exactly what all this “de-extinction” stuff is. It’s way sexier and more scifi to pretend like we can bring back mammoths (we can’t) than actual wildlife conservation, which is a lot of unsexy hard work but actually gets results.
