Jon Stewart has some absolute fucking NERVE to be making fun of Long COVID survivors and people still masking on his piece of shit podcast when he’s seen UP CLOSE the government deny healthcare and resources for 9/11 survivors who breathed in toxic air and are suffering decades later.

What a psycho

Just heard Bill Kristol, former chief of staff for Dan Quayle, say he thinks ICE should be defunded and that the entire DHS should probably be disbanded, which puts him to the left of maybe the majority of elected Democrats. Truly wild times we’re living in.

How has this cover somehow got even wilder with age?

It is 2018. The Atlantic has launched it and Signal's rabidly anti-trans crusade with a giant cover story. Corner stories include a lack of pandemic preparedness (two years before COVID-19) and reflecting on the wisdom of a rapist.
In 2018 Jesse Singal's story about how scary it is that trans kids exist dominated the front page of the Atlantic while stories about the lethal effects of white supremacy and our lack of pandemic preparedness sat up in the corner.

This is why I feel societal things started disintegrating after 2016 where I am. More and more aggressive driving, more rude people in stores/other places, just felt more dangerous. A few years ago I attributed it to "If people see leaders do whatever they want without consequence, so will they."

I'm confused about how the AP put out a story titled, "Why conservative American evangelicals are among Israel’s strongest supporters" with no mention of evangelical beliefs about Israel helping kick off the end times and the return of Christ.

THAT'S THE MAIN THING.

One of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s first meetings in the United States this week was with American evangelicals on Monday.

I'm struck by the near-total failure of leadership across civil society, in a country that fetishizes the concept. Whole sections of leadership books at every bookstore. Named, endowed "leadership" institutes and curricula across higher ed. Awards and special recognition for "leaders." AND YET

A big reason the tech billionaires are so interested in government now is they’re not innovating or building anything of value so they need protectionism & monopolistic leverage

Don't think there is a better illustration of AI-in-everything-whether-we-want-it-or-not than an AI bro buying an AI toy for his child who played with it for a bit and then seemed singularly unimpressed with the AI and turned it off.
He keeps turning it back on, and she keeps turning it off.

I suppose this is why so many authors are incensed about AI “writing” — it’s clearly just something tech dullards created to compensate for their own weaknesses and now they’re projecting that on all of us.

Look, I’m sorry you suck at writing. But don’t make the rest of us suffer your failures.
Writing is thinking.

It’s not a part of the process that can be skipped; it’s the entire point.
This is what's so baffling about so many suggestions for AI in the humanities classroom: they mistake the product for the point. Writing outlines and essays is important not because you need to make outlines and essays but because that's how you learn to think with/through complex ideas.

Here’s the most charitable reading I can offer:

The tech barons behaved as though they were atop a social hierarchy, and expected mass adoration for their generosity+forgiveness for mistakes.

Instead, Elizabeth Warren, Lina Khan et al treated them like the heads of *massive corporations.*

good to see everyone figuring out why we said, teaching stem without the humanities was a massive mistake. Raising a generation of engineer brain sociopaths who see human suffering and anguish as something to be laughed at while they try and engineer ways around public good really isn’t going well.

Step back, and look at broader history. Historically, the US has had a series of financial bubbles. Greedy & foolish people cause great harm, then govt steps in to minimize the harm.
CFPB emerged from the last financial bubble. Now the guys trying to set up the next one want it gone.
