We already had those conversations and most Americans and Canadians decided that torturing people in domestic prisons is worth it for the feeling (not the reality) of safety. The conversations we need to be having are about how to dismantle all the prisons that currently exist
Only a matter of time until a UC Berkeley law professor writes a memo justifying torture, a brave Vanity Fair writer gets tortured to say whether it hurts, and we have a national discussion about whether certain people should be tortured for our safety.

True that cultural change as such isn't the problem. Native traditions were the product of change. Cultures aren't ethical subjects but the peoples that have them are. Colonization is done to peoples, not just individuals. If peoples didn't exist, colonization couldn't be done to persons.
