This is very, very good, and exceptionally unsettling. My favorite sort of cultural criticism (being that which is also art criticism).

The spaces described are both unheimlich/uncanny and BLEAK AS FUCK, which is (I think) central to the argument, & also utterly grim as sociocultural commentary.
Over the past few weeks, HiLoBrow has run installments of my long essay “Without Care,” which maps out a 21st century gothic that I started calling The Devoid. All four installments are now live and you can read the whole thing here; enjoy!

"my least woke opinion is---"

That's enough. We've had enough people indulging in the "thrill of a little conservatism", as a treat. Of considering reactionary thought to be a salacious and taboo in a world descending into reactionary mania.

Give me your MOST woke opinions. We're bringing it back.

How a flawed idea is teaching millions of kids to be poor readers
For decades, schools have taught children the strategies of struggling readers, using a theory about reading that cognitive scientists have repeatedly debunked. And many teachers and parents don't kno...

After years of half-hearted attempts, Wife and I finally managed to see the aurora live in Chicago thanks to @drhazzard.bsky.social and @puppetkon46.bsky.social.

They have the good photos. I have this potato shot. Unlike 90% of the aurora photos you'll see, this was more impressive in person.

This got me wondering if the Hindi/Sanskrit -pur is the same root (Jaipur, Raipur, Kanpur etc.)

And it is! -pur is fort/stronghold, and thought to be derived from the same PIE root as -buri and -bury.

Starting to think about next year's most anticipated SFF* list for Lit Hub, and while I have a pretty well maintained spreadsheet I invariably miss stuff -- so please let me know about the books you're psyched about! (yours and others')

*primarily SFF but def into horror and literary crossover too
