The times where everything was available to anyone because it was supported by a third party have passed. That was a yesterday we thought would last forever without realizing we had a responsibility to maintain it. We must now be mindful stewards instead of passive consumers.

I've always said this, but since last November, I've been pointing this out frequently in whatever venues to whatever audiences I can: "The planet NASA studies most is Earth."
A lot of comments on Mars rovers or Moon landings, but it's important to remember that the planet NASA studies most is Earth. This is less about cutting flashy things like moonwalks and more about keeping communities in the dark on climate, weather, agriculture, pollution, natural hazards, and more.

And fighting against the growth of an authoritarian government takes a certain amount of stoicism and levelheadedness and discipline. Freaking out about fascism is defeatist.
The point of contention is whether or not we live in a fascist state. That has a definition. If I recall, Tom has acknowledged that we have fascists in govt, and doing some fascist things. But individual actions are a far cry from saying we live under fascism. Seems a reasonable distinction to me.

Claiming that routine immunization requirements for school are an issue of parental rights dehumanizes children. Kids have intrinsic rights just as anyone, and parents are obligated to provide the best care possible for them. That includes providing them with indicated medical interventions.

I have written and deleted a lot of posts but I keep thinking about how the brutal assassination of Minnesota State senator Melissa Hortman, her husband Mark, and their beloved dog Gilbert in June did not prompt this same level of calls for empathy, sympathy, and flags at half-mast.

‘Don’t let them take your humanity’ is a valuable warning & you should keep it in sight. But it cuts both ways. On one hand it means don’t become a monster but on the other it means don’t become soft to people who *literally* mean to take your humanity.

When I see people on here unknowingly join moral panics around child safety and technology, I think about how the future of this very platform hangs in the balance of this legislation that is designed to force us back onto big tech platforms. It’s not about the kids. It’s about all of us
Unfortunately, Bluesky is unavailable in Mississippi right now, due to a new state law that requires age verification for all users.
While intended for child safety, we think this law poses broader challenges & creates significant barriers that limit free speech & harm smaller platforms like ours.
