It's hard to over-state how important Trump admin subordination is to Putin, and not just because it hugely increases the pressure on Europe, above all on Ukraine. It's also because it gives Russia much more great power credibility, for which the Kremlin is absolutely desperate. 🧵
Both the Trump and Putin administrations like to think of themselves as hard-nosed realists - leaders in a world where great powers are the only stars that count. But Russia is China's dependent and Trump's US looks increasingly like Russia's junior partner. That's not very great power-like.

Putin is the Hyacinth Bucket of great power leaders: it's all about keeping up appearances. Russia's a great power only to the extent that it can persuade others it is, because there's very little material basis for its pretensions to great power status. That's why Trump's deference is so important.

The US envoy is on tape colluding with the Russian govt, the 28 point plan appears to be Russian in origin but was claimed by the US as its own, and Trump has a long history of stiffing creditors, but Ukraine should sign now and trust the promise of a security guarantee later.
That's not how peace agreements work. Getting something on a promise of payment and then not paying is, however, exactly how Donald Trump works. Ukraine and European NATO/the EU would be extremely foolish to fall for this. kyivindependent.com/us-to-discus...

True. But this theater is getting tiresome, and I am not sure it's working for Europe. Perhaps it's time to make it clear to Trump that there are no negotiations instead of leading him to think that there are—and in the process fooling a lot of Europeans into believing that peace is close.
What folks need to realize about "peace talks" is that this is all theater for Washington. Ukraine knows that Russia has no intention of stopping the war, and the Russians know the Ukrainians know that. So this is just all a performance for Trump, hoping he blames the other for the lack of peace.

What was true of the Trump administration's original, extortionate minerals plan is equally true of this peace plan. It will probably be true of the next White House plan, and the one after that.
To repeat: the Trump administration peace deal was always a deal for peace between Russia and the US, not Russia and Ukraine. In it, it seems, the US gets Ukraine's resources, Russia gets Ukraine's land, and Ukraine gets to say thank you.
