1) As the New Year begins, I'm contemplating taking a nearly impossible task for the first month of the year. It would mean testing my limits. But it would also come with significant responsibility (i.e., to many others), so it's not just about testing my limits for a personal challenge...

This is the first page – essentially, a cover page – of one of my students’ essays. The following pages consist of a properly formatted essay. Let’s just say I know the feeling.

So, side-by-side, here is the card that I got for Laura, and here is the card that Laura got for me. We opened them up at about the same time. We were both amused. Also, this is evidence that we think alike and spend a lot of time together, so our senses of humour have sort of merged.

While substitute teaching in a tenth-grade English class today, one of my students used the phrase "I'm halfway there," and instinctively, I replied with "living on a prayer!" Because I'm a product of the 1980s.

There are terrible things happening in the world, and many reasons why we might feel despair. All the more reason why we should take courage and hope from the light bearers in our world. For example, John Irving has a new novel out, so there’s that.

Weird experience: while dining with friends downtown on Saturday evening, we noticed what appeared to be a parade of women in red wigs and gaudy dresses. When my friend inquired, it turned out that they were dressed as Mrs. Roper from "Three's Company." Clearly some sort of party, but still strange.
