Lack of album sales. You can thank The Spotification of the music industry.

Streaming. No money from streaming and limited from physical product (coz of streaming) so income is live shows. Then the bastard Ticketmasters add their super-scamming greed

This is a good point

When I started going to gigs in the late 70s a lot of tours were effectively loss leaders for record sales, hence the relatively inexpensive tickets. That financial balancing act has been flipped on its head by streaming.

That’s partly why I baulked at it. It just seemed bonkers.

I don’t mean to be That Old Man, but I saw Floyd on their 94 tour, for a stage show that featured a dozen people on stage, hundreds of lights, lasers, pyros etc. I think it cost £34 including the bus travel from Wigan. How have concert prices escalated way beyond inflation? What new costs are there?
burningshed.com
That’s about £72 in today’s money…obviously Brexit is a factor depending where the band is from and post-COVID various costs went up but yeah.

My thoughts exactly.

Good point about the associated costs.

Refused to pay £90+ for Nine Inch Nails at the Co-Op Manchester a couple of months back. Ticket plus travel, food and drink would have put it over £150. Merch was extortionate too ( and not very good).

Yes on several, I look on Twickets usually closer to the date.
I'd rather spend money on newer artists, see more of them for the price of one inflated big concert.

Yes Iron Maiden at Knebworth that were recently released. £150 per ticket put me off.
I was going to try for David Byrne tickets but I didn't realise they were that much.

I spent £130 on Squeeze's anniversary tour last year, but that was a front row VIP ticket. Can't see me paying that for any artist again (unless XTC miraculously get back together for a tour).

I still have my Peter Gabriel ticket from the O2 in 2013. It was £50. The exact same seat last year, face value from Ticketmaster, not secondary market or dynamic pricing, £194.

I passed.

Hoping I get the opportunity to make the choice about Rush!

I’ve avoided Bruce Springsteen, David Gilmour& David Byrne of late due to what I consider high ticket prices. I’m sure there were others.

We paid *£75* a ticket to see George Michael in Norwich in 2007 (NINETEEN YEARS AGO, WHICH CANT POSSIBLY BE TRUE)

It felt breathtakingly expensive at the time but was worth every penny, particularly in light of his sad passing.

Tom Waits tickets were £95 about 15 years ago. I do regret not going though.
Dizzee Rascal tix are on sale for £55 - that’s a joke, £30 would be reasonable

I balked at spending £130+ for Sigur Ros last week. I won't spend more than £50 for a gig now no matter who it is.

Prog belongs on CD, because it's too long to fit on vinyl.

£150 for Kate Bush seemed very high in 2014 (but paid it in a flash, of course). Seems almost inexpensive now.

Yep, all within the last couple of years: Peter Gabriel, Bruce Springsteen and most recently David Byrne all in the approximately £200 bracket, all of whom I'd seen several times before and (sadly) were unlikely to be better than previous outings.

$250 for David Gilmour in the upper bowl of Madison Square Garden was too much for me. I get the sinking feeling I'll be able to give another answer on Monday when Rush tickets go on sale...

I didn't go and see Prince in Leeds in 2014 as I refused to pay over £100 for a ticket. Then a couple of years later I wished I had :(

This is the danger: bucket list gigs (especially when you don’t know it’s the last chance!)
