There’s something doubly grating about the pious invocation of “Western civilization” by the sort of incurious dolt who wouldn’t know a Titian canvas, a Beethoven quartet, or a Socratic dialogue if whapped them upside the head.
It has long been clear that unalloyed racism lies at the core of Trumpism, and he is becoming increasingly explicit about this.

I really want to know the full story behind this epic hack, and yet I also hope it is never solved.
It's my favorite day! It's the 38th anniversary of the Max Headroom signal broadcast intrusion!

1st incident lasted 25s during the 9PM news on WGN-TV in Chicago; The 2nd, 2hrs later, lasted ~90s on PBS affiliate WTTW during Dr. Who.

You can watch it here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=oqge...

“I’ve met a lot of admirals and generals in my time, and I’m not sure that a dressing-down from Pete Hegseth is going to be all that effective in either exciting them or scaring them.”

I haven’t met as many admirals & generals as @radiofreetom.bsky.social, but I’ve met a few & this take tracks.

This ignores the repeated situations in which Hegseth has blindsided the administration. I think this was very much his idea, and Trump was brought in at the last minute because DOD heard the rumbles from GO/FOs who wondered why they had to haul ass to Quantico to listen to a TV show host.
I don't think Hegseth would buy a new coffee mug without running it by Trump's people first.

The idea that gathering all the generals from all over the world was in any way his idea is comical.

The Ezra Klein style of caring about political “strategy” over consistent moral principles and values of your own reminds me of how a lot of pop culture consumers obsessively track box office and chart performance rather than just evaluating based on whether things are good or if they like them

I'll say this once more:

@kairyssdal.bsky.social, of public radio (APM vs NPR), giving daily lessons on putting things clearly and honestly.

Enough of this "falsely" and "without evidence" and "departure from norms" wiggle talk.

The man lies. Is deluded. Steals. And constantly breaks the law
He lied. Gotta use the word
NEW: Trump falsely suggested today that rank-and-file FBI agents fomented the Jan. 6 attack that a mob of his supporters unleashed on the Capitol, leaning into conspiracy theories as he accuses a second FBI director of committing crimes

And also: don’t mention the war!
I generally agree here, and I agree with Tom's contention that the word "fascist" has been so overused that it's hard for people to realize what it looks like.

I'm specifically reminded of the bit from Fawlty Towers where a hysterical Basil shouts, "THIS IS EXACTLY HOW NAZI GERMANY STARTED!"
We are not yet in a dictatorship. Trump and his claque are making a run at it. But if you want to keep a democracy, you have to actually remember that you still have one.

And if that doesn't get everyone to stop talking about the Epstein files, inflation, and bad job numbers, there's always the option of starting a war with Venezuela
Breaking news: President Trump announces he is sending troops to Portland, Oregon, and to immigration detention facilities around the country, authorizing “Full Force, if necessary."
Trump deploys troops to Portland, authorizing ‘full force’ if necessary
The action escalates a campaign to use the U.S. military against Americans that has little modern precedent.

Trump's behavior is perfectly explicable if you think of him as a narcissist who is basically stuck at a child's level of development, who fears powerful people and is a walking bundle of insecurities.
You don't know, no one knows, outside of Putin and Trump, but Trump's behaviour is largely inexplicable for a sane person.

The insistence here that Moscow has horrifying blackmail on Trump is just as nutty as MAGA world's dismissal of it.
Do the Russians know bad stuff about Trump? Of course they do.
Is it the weird stuff you guys think it is? Almost certainly not, and it's likely about money. /1

Another possibility is that Russia has things that Trump worries about not on *him*, but on his family.
Not exactly a family of geniuses (except for Uncle John at MIT). But again, simple explanation is best: Trump's weak and Putin is tough.
But even then he's got "fake news" and "AI gen deepfakes" etc to fall back on. The more I think about it the more I think it must be about the only thing Trump cares about; himself. So literal "we'll kill you" or "we'll bankrupt you".

One of the reasons that I push back so hard on people fixated on the Fairness Doctrine (aside from the fact that history matters) is that many liberals still think that such measures are magical solutions to the crisis of democracy.

Tucker Carlson is an odious piece of shit.

And if this odious piece of shit can somehow rally MAGA to turn on Trump and back off from supporting Netanyahu and Israel's war with Iran then so be it.

Was consumed all day at work by the fact that trump tweeted "UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER!" at Iran, which from any normal president would be hugely consequential and it wasn't even a story because the media has just sort of deformed itself into nihilistic acceptance of the fact that he's insane
Worse, the entire media basically knows this. They incredibly low standards they display for him are obvious. And yet they rarely highlight this as the disqualifying truth it is.
