These people have been told that the chatbox is an everything machine. The way out can't be to provide a better everything machine because that can't exist.
Because hundreds of millions of people are already using these tools and finding utility in them. And they're not crazy, they are reasonable. Telling them, "no, you have to do without", will make them think, "Oh, I guess the critics are crazy and the AI bros are the reasonable ones."

AI registers in the public consciousness as a social/political project centered around labor (eg via data theft and precaritization) more than anything else (eg ML). that's the social phenomenon of AI, and this conflation NPR does is not super helpful
This is a legitimate scientific revolution in meteorology.
Also, to be clear, these models are not the AI LLMs that most people are familiar with. They are machine learning algorithms trained on observations (actually reanalysis).
