I want our young people to know that there is a path forward, that a better world is possible. I don't want them to give up, to become cynical. They deserve to be young and full of optimism. They are owed a world that supports and sustains optimism.

Do not assume that everything they set out to do is inevitable. They have been successfully fought on multiple fronts, from courtroom wins that have actually stuck to city and state governments that haven't backed down, to activists in the streets organizing against their violence.

You can watch this Green Beret describe this experience in his own words to @vanhollen.senate.gov, and for us, and I cried. I’m not sure how you could watch this veteran tell this child’s story and not feel all of the emotions at once.

TLDR is let your grief & horror become action. Give all the material support you can directly to Gazans.

This. The EO—though it doesn't carry the force of the law—calls for even more efforts to criminalize and institutionalize unhoused people, folks with unmet mental health needs, drug users and those deemed to be "vagrants." It aims to render people as disposable, and control, lock up + disappear them

An eloquent image:

Setting aside the content under the tarp for a moment, teens were asked to make art expressing what it is like to be a teen, and the end result was a mural wrapped in a tarp by adults.

I bet a lot of teens would find this expressive of their experience.

This is extremely important. What is described in this thread would constitute massive corruption of the U.S. legal system, aided and abetted by a public university. Journalists must immediately examine the facts here, and so should California legislators and regulators. Shocking.

It’s worse than “Gaza is being starved and destroyed and no one cares.” It’s that hundreds of millions *do* care and are powerless to stop it. We need a world where that can never happen, where the masses actually have political power.

I thought that most of the institutions would go along with authoritarianism because they support some fascism. But I didn't think it would be so fast.
We are seven months in, and the speed with which vital civic institutions are capitulating to authoritarian demands we once would have regarded as inconceivable in an established liberal democracy is jawdropping. I hadn't thought I was polyannaish about America, but it's really stunning.

Hirsch, the daughter of Holocaust survivors, is now thinking of leaving the classroom:
“A university that treats criticism of Israel as antisemitic & threatens sanctions for those who disobey is no longer a place of open inquiry … I just don’t see how I can teach about genocide in that environment.”
Marianne Hirsch is one of the greatest scholars of memory studies working today, and I have learned so much from her work. Last semester, I assigned her to my students and they learned from her. If she feels she cannot stay at Columbia, that speaks badly of Columbia now. apnews.com/article/colu...
