New preprint from the lab! We discovered a transient fluidization in the basal region of human forebrains by tracking microdroplets in cerebral organoids. This “basal fluidization”, absent in gorilla and mouse, may contribute to greater surface expansion in human forebrains

I have to keep this deliberately vague, but this is a total disaster for academic research.

And imposing it so suddenly is just cruel. I’ve got friends scrambling to get back to the US before midnight tonight. Do you know how hard that is to do on 36 hours of notice?
Trump to impose $100,000 fee per year for H-1B visas, in blow to tech
The Trump administration said on Friday it would ask companies to pay $100,000 per year for H-1B worker visas, prompting some big tech companies to warn visa holders to stay in the U.S. or quickly return.

Exactly, it is a yearly fee of $100k for up to 6 years. It is insane. They are deciding to keep top talent from working in the US. I have no words…

I was on a H1B visa for part of my postdoc. Also when I started as Assistant Professor. Several of my postdocs where on H1Bs. This new fee will affect more academia than tech or finance companies because there is no way universities can pay that…

This is indeed a unique opportunity for @ec.europa.eu. But to ensure that „excellence thrives where it is enabled, protected & shared“ the % of funded proposals needs to stay the same (or actually increase). Otherwise it’s just a waste of talent.
ec.europa.eu
The 2025 call for #MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships drew 17,058 applications worldwide.

A 64.6% increase from 2024, it's the most popular call in over four decades.

Excellence thrives where it is enabled, protected and shared — and Europe provides that environment.

#ChooseEurope
A scientist in a lab coat looks through a microscope in a laboratory, with other researchers blurred in the background. Overlaid text reads: “Record Applications – Choose Europe: EU research fellowships attract record 17,058 applications.” The European Commission logo appears in the bottom right corner.

Congratulations Ryan and @jesseveenvliet.bsky.social and all the team! 🎉👏 I am happy to have been able to help a bit make this happen. Really useful quantitative analysis for gastruloids and beyond! I am sure it will enable many discoveries 😃

Inspired by @deniswirtz.bsky.social and team, I'm collating a database of #PhD and #postdoc fellowships in the #EU. I'm standardising the information an entry needs, making it easier to (1) search and (2) contribute - and I would appreciate input, especially from other #ECR! Please share!
