This will date me slightly, but I'm just old enough to remember as a kid when (insert James Coburn voice) The Phone Company literally owned your phone. If anything went wrong, they would send someone out to look at it. And they were incredibly solid and heavy.

I'm going to make a curious recommendation. If you're interested in D.H. Lawrence's "Women in Love", I encourage you to watch Ken Russell's film first. I think that it's one of Russell's two best and it's surprisingly restrained for him. Crucially, he manages to capture Lawrence's tone and mood.
