This excellent thread reminded me to announce a new paper, out last week, "What would it mean to win? Envisioning alternative ecopolitical futures with young climate justice activists," featured in a book I co-edited on community-engaged research for climate justice. 1/2

honestly I don't really mind writing the 15 page research summary (though 10 pages would be better for both writing and reviewing). It is, inter alia, a helpful conduit to plan out a project.

What kills me is the extra week(!) filling in tabs in research.gov, and ...

the amount of time we spend trying to raise $$$ for our research is absolutely immense and results in a huge amount of wasted time. BUT there is a limited amount of money, so they have to have some method of distributing it. not sure what the best way to do it is.

The problem is that anyone working towards justice is slowly being labeled a "terrorist."

This is happening in Israel. It's happening in the US. And it's even happening in the UK and Germany.

Don't you all see it?
hopeberry.bsky.social
On what grounds are these courageous humanitarians with their flotilla of baby formula and such being deemed “terrorists”? Anyone accusing Greta Thunberg, one of the most internationally famous ppl for her integrity, of nefarious motivations, only reflects poorly on themselves

Dear US: "All members of the military have the right, and in some cases the duty, to refuse illegal orders. Your oath is to the Constitution (which incorporates internat'l [human rights] treaties ratified by the US...), not to the commander-in-chief or to any other indiv'l in the chain of command."

I will start teaching my students how to use AI when my colleagues in computer science start to teach Homer, Dante, Langston Hughes, Borges, Foucault, Audre Lord, Spivak, and Donna Haraway in their classes
disabilitystor1.bsky.social
I realize many people don’t quite get that not every single professor in every single university teaches computer science and might actually be trained in and invested in teaching other things, like let’s say, history? Or poetry.
Or sociology.
It is not our job to teach students how to use AI.

If you don’t teach your students how to use AI, you’re doing them a huge disservice because they won’t have jobs in the future.

Fun fact to add: In 1935 German Defense Minister Blomberg - the one who introduced the new oath of loyalty to Hitler renamed the German Defense Ministry… wait for it… the “Ministry of War”.
johnsipher.bsky.social
In 1935 German leadership called a surprise meeting and informed their previous oath to uphold the Weimar constitution was now void and they instead must swear a personal oath to the Führer. Many claimed they didn’t like the order, but they did it anyway.

I started doing this thing where when I read a book I admire I try to find the author’s email & send a quick message saying I appreciated it. No big deal, not trying to be weird, but like: thank you for helping me think something new. It’s hard writing books. It matters when people read them.

Did you see your friend's book at the store? Email them a pic! See them cited? Email them (esp. as aggregators fail to catch many citations)! Did a scholar mention their work! Email them! Did a student use their work in a paper? Email! Did a professor teach their work? Email! Email! All the time!!!

Friends tell other friends when they see their work out in the world. Just got an email about my book and it made my day.

Trump just signed a terrifying order classifying anyone challenging his regime or espousing anti-MAGA worldviews as “domestic terrorists.” It directs National Joint Terrorism Task Force, DOJ & Treasury to investigate & prosecute individuals/nonprofits/funders & freeze assets.🧵

1/ A longtime Wired editor just wrote a mush-brained essay about how he totally missed the political rot of Silicon Valley (& still doesn't get it).

But in the late 1990s, a Wired journalist warned of a toxic ideology bubbling up from tech. Paulina Borsook has largely been erased. Let's change that

It really is this simple. The idea that there’s this deluge of people out there that “want” to be homeless no matter what society would try to do for them is a political myth; ginned up so that we all have more people to hate and we’ll maybe not look more closely at income inequality.
brenttoderian.bsky.social
“In Finland, the number of homeless people has fallen sharply. Those affected receive a small apartment & counselling with no preconditions. 4 out of 5 people affected make their way back into a stable life. And all this is CHEAPER than accepting homelessness.”

It costs a lot less to house people.
Finland ends homelessness and provides shelter for all in need - scoop.me
In Finland, the number of homeless people has fallen sharply. Why? The country applies the "Housing First" concept agains homelessness.

If I could just summarize 1 sentence from the new National Academy of Sciences study on climate, boldface, flashing red, it would be:

"the evidence for current and future harm to human health and welfare created by human-caused GHGs is beyond scientific dispute."

BEYOND SCIENTIFIC DISPUTE

Disabled people aren’t “less than”.

It’s not a moral failing.

Most people will experience disability at some point.

It’s a minority group you can join at any time.

We need more accessibility, inclusion, accommodation and compassion.

There’s no social justice without disability justice.

Some recommendations: More Everything Forever by Adam Becker, the work of Gil Duran, and the Dystopia Now podcast. All very informative and get at the idea of techno optimism and accelerationism.

Hopeful. A 2025 study of 102 autocratization episodes found that "democratic breakdown does not necessarily prevent a return to democracy, especially if autocratization is halted and reversed relatively soon – the average time for turnarounds is about five years after the onset of autocratization."
