Your regular reminder that over a lifetime, people born in 1956 will each receive on average £291,000 more from the welfare state than they paid in, compared to £132,000 for people born in 1996 (h/t Resolution Foundation)

Just something to consider next time you hear “I’ve paid in all my life…”

We have an absolute gamechanger class of drugs that are widely tolerated and very effective. They make people healthier! This is incredibly good news, both for individuals and the NHS. And yet people are determined to shit all over this extraordinary inflection point for our health.

Excellent, clear, and persuasive. LLMs are machines that have been programmed to play the *chat game*, just like chess-playing programs play chess.
I strongly agree with this. LLMs give the misleading appearance of doing all the things we do with language. In fact, they do none of them and instead do just one, highly unusual thing with it. (For explanation, see: keithfrankish.github.io/articles/Fra...)

"America is a place of immeasurable wealth. It is quite literally the richest and most fortunate country that has ever existed. And yet its leader acts like such a pitiful cry-baby on the world stage, constantly talking about how mean everyone is and how horrible everyone has been to it"

If you receive the state pension, you're on welfare.
It is a discretionary payment which may be increased/reduced/removed at any moment.
There is no pension pot.
You are not receiving "your" money back.

the most pernicious lie of reaganism/thatcherism is that every individual part of the world needs to be profitable. the idea of a “public good” is being lost.

in football terms, it’s like insisting every player on the pitch has to score, and getting rid of anyone who doesn’t.
