okay we can't do polls here but if you hear someone say "giant spider" is the first thing you picture

-a regular type of very large spider that exists in japan or
-like a lord of the rings monster spider

i also hate that this broad pivot to video coincides with AI deepfakes becoming easier & more pervasive

there are more reasons than there have ever been to want to limit how many images of your face are publicly available
will also add - yes, this is my personal crusade - that turning podcasts into videos implicitly asks women to once again make more effort than men, as the bar for "camera-ready" for one gender is obviously higher than for the other
‘Painful to hear!’ How podcasts’ rush to video is turning them into dreadful listens

A warning from the lawyer representing the unjustly fired Oklahoma TA! Beware of GFM scams: her client is NOT crowdfunding at this time.
Please be aware of possible scams! My client, Mel Curth, is not seeking any donations at this time. She is grateful for your support and instead requests folks that want to help to donate to the local organizations of your choice!

pretty wild that watsky wrote the lyric "my imagination is crazy as glenn beck" into a song that came out 2 whole years after jon lajoie gave the world, "i don't give a fuck, i'm crazy, like mel gibson/no wait that just makes me sound like a racist"

wikipedia has a whole list of actors who have "voiced" the Kool Aid Man, but the Kool Aid Man hasn't always been animated. he has often been a guy in a costume. who was the guy in the costume

why doesn't my generation get more shit for inventing the word "unironic," the worst-sounding synonym for "genuine"

thinking about what "viewpoint diversity"/"viewpoint discrimination" in the classroom means in relation to this OU story; i mean yeah it's p obviously a targeted attack on a trans TA & we shouldn't lose sight of that, but also, more broadly, CAN you accommodate any 1A-protected viewpoint in a class?

whenever i think something seems like it should be a band name i go on bandcamp & search it to see if someone else has had the same idea. acts i have found this way include:

-Gentleman Caller

-The Cactuses

-Vernacular Manslaughter

gotta love the classic conservative line "bullying people to enforce gender norms is fine & also isn't actually happening." like that's the arc here. it's okay that it happens & also it doesn't happen. does not scan on the most surface level
Turning Point at OU posted this girl's essay in full and man is it rough

you just can't have a meaningful conversation about the potential benefits of "AI" while this stuff is happening. it's like trying to talk about how useful an airplane might be during a hijacking

okay so like this is what i mean when i say you could make a really good case for expropriating the wealth of billionaires just for the sake of the billionaires. like imagine having infinity dollars & doing this. this is obviously bad for him, we can all see it

(it's worse for everyone else though)

The way Catholic conservatives are responding to the Pope is actually a great illustration of how religion is far more the excuse of bigotry than its source.

watched Task & thought it was good but the ending wadn't as good as Mare of Easttown. after seeing some praise for the ending of Task i have been negatively polarized to the position that the ending of Task is pretty bad

I get why it happens but goddamn do I wish anything could hit as hard on the timeline as something that sucks that everyone hates written by or about the worst person you know. I wish something good or interesting was able to get anywhere near the traction some shit that sucks does.

just watched Task, the new miniseries Ingelsby made instead of a 2nd season of Mare (sidenote: making a 2nd miniseries w/ similar vibes was a way better call than a direct follow up) & it explicitly references the pandemic, which is interesting
most fiction since 2020 either ignores covid or just isn't about it, which is fine, but Mare of Easttown is a weird case for explicitly taking place in an alternate universe where covid didn't happen
