Today is a day when arts degrees are worthless, but the product of those degrees is so valuable it would kill an entire industry if they were made to pay for it.

And making theft illegal would “kill” the thieving industry. Good. Make theft illegal again.

I cannot understand what these people think the purpose of human life is?

It is *not* "pursue joy, deal justly, love well, try to understand as much and see as much of this beautiful world and of the deepness, richness and variety of human culture and experience as you can before you die"?

How is this repeatedly made into a policy issue - by *all* parties - when the blunt fact of the matter is that grown adults who are obliged to pay for their own education, and relentlessly pursued to repay their loans, should be able to study whatever the fuck they want.

I continue to be simultaneously astonished and dismayed at the race for bottom that mainstream UK politicians seem to be engaged in right now.

Still – looking at it positively – it could be seen as an exercise in making themselves irrelevant.

Remember how in the 60s sci-fi always had this joke that people would eat "Food pills" which were the entire meal condensed into a tiny pill, with the joke being that obviously nobody would actually want or enjoy that?

Abridging has always been in vogue. Now, apps like Blinkist take entire books and crunch them down to a series of what are called Blinks—which amount to around 2,000 words. “Is that what books are coming to, a handy social lubricant?” Anthony Lane asks.
Can You Read a Book in a Quarter of an Hour?
Phone apps now offer to boil down entire books into micro-synopses. What they leave out is revealing.

#OnThisDay

8 October
Brighton, London, Hastings
A white cat with black top of head and two small black splotches on his side looks up at the camera while standing on a white, orange and black stripy carpet Narrow street of small colourful 2 up 2 down houses which open straight onto the pavement, at centre a telegraph pole has a ladder leaning on it View down a dimly lit tube station platform towards the tunnel. For context it’s Archway but the nearest visible roundel is too small to read. Selfie of me sitting on a bench in the sun, I have a purple hat, headphones and sunglasses on. I look grim but it’s just resting bitch face as I was probably content.

Thankfully I’ve stopped. Making the inadvertent noise that is.

Just had one of those “hang on what’s that odd noise?” moments when it turned out it was me breathing.

That's great thanks very much for the info! I'll see what headway I can make persuading the council to change it to something more sensible.

There should be an easy way to force councils to recognize and use the quick, easy and intuitive version of your address, e.g. 27a John Avenue rather than the needlessly complex variant they have on record e.g. Flat Ground Floor And Basement Maisonette, 27 John Avenue.

There's either an audience for what you want to do or there isn't (though if you're excited about it someone else likely will be) but there's no audience for a watered-down imitation of the latest hot thing -- and to the extent there is, a million other people are catering to that.

How did we get to a point where politicians standing for things is refreshing?

I feel like until at least the nineties, everyone agreed that was the *point* of politicians.

I like Zack Polanski for the same reason I like Zohran Mamdani.

He’s happy to stand for something.

And in a world of pandering focus grouped bullshit politics, it’s really kind of refreshing.
