David is slightly unfair. There is a clear difference here.

Conservatives and Reform plan to forcibly expel large numbers of people who are legal, permanent residents of migrant origin. The BNP proposal is voluntary.

This below is from the 2005 BNP manifesto.

Spot the difference with current Tory and Reform policy.

In all honesty, it’s not rhetoric any more. It’s not narrative. I’ve experienced more racism in the last 4 months than I can ever remember. The wheels are off in the UK and it’s being led by 3 political parties.

Ah shit. Well fingers crossed for you.

Wow that is a punishing route. Good luck!

I've long had an interest in asylum and immigration issues, on which I'm sadly no longer reporting.
I also like riding my bike.
So, next Saturday, I'm undertaking the #BoxHill100 in aid of the emergency appeal by Southwark Day Centre for Asylum Seekers: www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/box-hill-1...
Box Hill 100 for Southwark's asylum seeker centre
I'm raising money to help keep Southwark Day Centre for Asylum Seekers open at a time when funding is desperately short

“Rather than building cohesion, such insecurity risks producing… disenfranchisement among those left in limbo, and heightened suspicion among the wider public, who are encouraged to believe that migrants must continually prove themselves. Far from calming anxieties, this… risks fuelling them.”

One of my favourite conversations I've had in a while.
Really getting into what's wrong in the current moment, what the facts are that are being obscured by racism & lies, and what we should be doing about it

Do check it out!

It’s out! I spoke to @zoejardiniere.bsky.social about migration, the realities, the challenges and how to confront the real threat of far right takeover of our country on a platform of fear and disinformation.

Going to stick my neck out and say this policy will never be implemented, or will be successfully challenged if it is, leaving the government blundering around (not for the first time) infuriating its former/ potential supporters and getting no credit from its opponents 1/
Mahmood demands migrants earn right to settlement in UK
New tests will include learning English to a high standard, paying National Insurance and not claiming benefits.

Yes exactly, though this tendency has been on the rise for as long as I can remember.

Members of the fucking Bullingdon club lecturing care workers on integrating into their local community.

It's genuinely fascinating how much the political turn around this stuff is just from people who visibly are not engaged with the country they actually live in. Questions about who is English settled by the Mail's backpage in the 1984 Euros. Cliches about some of the best UK holiday destinations.

Delaying ILR/settlement/citizenship for this group would very likely leave them to the mercy of a future Reform/Tory govt -and to policies which Starmer and Mahmood have (rightly) explicitly described as racist.

A real litmus test for Labour.

I want to talk about generative AI because of the defeatist impulses chronicled in this article. While simply expresssing a defiant attitude cannot always change lived-in reality, in certain cases it definitely can. This is in part because, early on, a conflict can exist at a perceptions level. 1/?

It also places yet another barrier between migrant victims of abuse and exploitation and any kind of help.

The kinds of circs where you can get benefits (with difficulty) when on a visa with no recourse to public funds are eg. fleeing your home because of domestic abuse or your spouse dying.

So this means brutalising and trying to deport people who have already had the worst things happen to them.
paperghost.bsky.social
i've seen so many articles on this today, and not a single one so far has pointed out that where "not taking any benefits payments" is concerned, you have no access to public funds on a visa. this has been the case for years. but nobody, from the BBC down, will challenge this or anything else
nisreenalwan.bsky.social
To say that you will ‘have to volunteer’ to be eligible for settled status even if working full time as a doctor or nurse for example is not really volunteering because it would not be voluntary. The govt should call it something else if they want to enforce it.

And finally, @minnierahman.bsky.social says on Trump, migration sector is clear: Farage/Reform are learning from Trump/MAGA. Infrastructure for detention and raids being set up now will be used under a Reform Govt. They would not learn from Trump’s first term, they would just install “Trump term 2”.

I am so tired of all the different technocratic ways you can dress up racism and bigotry. I think contribution hasn't quite outstripped integration yet but give it a minute.
