It *really* annoys me when people talk about MLE, they often assume that Cockney has just disappeared. Go to the Salmon and Ball on Bethnal Green Road and tell me Cockney has disappeared (!)

A lot of our research can and does connect with societal problems. But a lot of academics are much more comfortable churning out journal articles (that no one in society ever reads) than actually talking to or working with the people who they study.

IMO the public sympathy issue is partially due to the fact that a lot of academics *refuse* to do public engagement/outreach work because they think they're above it.
