Playing around with how to represent volume in #Snouty light sheet data. Here is a dividing hiPSC with endogenously tagged histone in all three orthogonal projections. Bluer is further away. If anything, it distracts from politics.

Ling Jin, Muchen Liu and Xianrui Cheng report a centrosome-independent, self-organising microtubule aster that exhibits mostly inverted microtubule polarity and recruits cytokinesis signals to its centre.

Very sad news, John Gurdon has died.

A developmental biologist's developmental biologist, Nobel prize winner

His work is the foundation of much of today's dev & stem cell bio.

An inspiration to many, including me. Always asking questions & wanting the answers

Now out in final published form - with a new title "Mechanical control of cell fate decisions in the skin epidermis" and simulations/quantifications! See below for thread of how unbalanced tensions can bias fate choices in minimal 3D models of tissues! www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Happy to share the latest work from Preeti Sahu, with Adriana Sanchez-Danes on the biomechanics of cell fate choices during tumor initiation! We implement/test a 3D vertex model with proliferation and fate choices for multilayered tissues! See 🧵 below (1/n) bit.ly/3ZXxJzk

For this #FluorescenceFriday, a gorgeous image of an adult mouse kidney labeled with AQP2 and alpha SMA antibodies. AQP2 (green) marks the collecting duct and distal connecting segment while SMA marks the arterial tree. Courtesy of talented postdoc Sarah McLarnon.
Image of a fluorescently labeled adult mouse kidney showing AQP2 staining of collecting ducts and connecting segment in green and alpha SMA staining of the arterial tree in magenta. The collecting ducts look like squiggly branches.

Pleased to share updates for 2 deep learning papers:
1/2: VASCilia, which can automatically segment and analyze cochlear hair cell stereocilia bundles. We have added more features to the Napari plugin and some new data highlighting the power of our high-throughput automated 3D analysis approach.

Thanks for the redirect Noelle- I was still wondering about ventricle patterning- do you end up with extra folds due to tissue growth/mitosis across the extended apical surface in these cells with multiple centrioles and what this does to tissue tension/biomechanics? Do they get extruded?

Our new preprint 😅 ! We show cytokinetic abscission completion is important to maintain polarized epithelial structure, and p53-mediated apoptosis guards the structure when there are failures of abscission. In vivo in brain. #cellbio #abscission #devbio #cilia www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...
Cytokinetic abscission failures in a polarized epithelium affect apical membrane size and cilia
Cytokinetic abscission is the last step of cell division, during which the intercellular bridge between daughter cells is severed. While abscission genes are linked to cancers and developmental disord...

Supercool Nicole- looking forward to a deeper read. I’m curious in your Cep55 p53 dKO with hugely disrupted neuroepithelial organisation- what happens to brain size and structure? 🧠🧐 Mid body remnants, increased collation & bi ciliated progenitors- love it 🫶

Promising direction to recognise the reward of immigration at a time when so much toxic rhetoric is spewed in the opposite direction in #UKPoli.

The question is can the Labour government actually do... something? For once? Forget their snafus. Let's see a positive policy established & celebrated.
