Six months ago I published my debut collection of essays, about coming of age in the Y2K era and the disappointment I’ve felt since. Here’s an excerpt at @slate.com about my 5th grade Y2K time capsule letter, my beloved silver inflatable chair, Aaliyah, and getting old slate.com/life/2024/12...
I Uncovered My Fifth Grade Time-Capsule Essay About the New Millennium. It Put So Much Into Perspective.
A look back on the hopefulness and heartbreak of the new millennium.

I do not care if Hegseth wears a dress or a full beat. I care that he is an abusive alcoholic implementing policies to push out nonwhite soldiers and let rapists and war criminals off the hook. Though his vanity is certainly amusing.

Wait, do you live in the purple house? I saw two adorable black cats sunning themselves on the porch the other day!

BREAKING: Our client Mario Guevara, an Emmy-winning journalist detained by ICE in retaliation for livestreaming law enforcement activity, will be deported tomorrow to El Salvador.

Mario and his family are being punished for his reporting. This cruelty is meant to stifle our free press.

ICE now very literally at war with Presbyterians

Gonna be thinking about this lede for a minute.
(RNS) — Last month, the Rev. David Black stood in front of a Chicago-area U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility and spread his arms wide. Adorned in all black and wearing a clerical collar, the pastor looked up at a group of masked, heavily armed ICE agents on the roof and began to pray.

“I invited them to repentance,” Black, a minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), said in an interview. “I basically offered an altar call. I invited them to come and receive that salvation, and be part of the kingdom that is coming.”

But when Black began to lower his arms a few seconds later, the agents responded to his spiritual plea by firing pepper balls, or chemical agents that cause eye irritation and respiratory distress, video footage shows. One struck Black in the head, exploding into a puff of white pepper smoke and forcing him to his knees. Fellow demonstrators rushed to his aid, and as the pastor rubbed his face in pain, the agents continued to fire.

“We could hear them laughing,” Black said.

I see pieces like this a lot, often w/ a spin of lamenting cultural degeneration, but reading is a LABOR issue, it’s declined because so many people are working overtime or two jobs & employers expect after hours work. France has Earth’s highest reading rate b/c long lunch breaks & labor protections

I have a moment in Y2K where I talk about the political formation of Republican voters, and a clarifying moment for me was when a previously liberal voting person informed me they were voting for George W Bush because now they had money and they felt low taxes were more important than abortion

I kind of can’t believe this Bari Weiss quote is even real, and yet www.nytimes.com/2025/10/06/b...
“I know that there are some people in this room who don’t believe that my marriage should have been legal … and that’s ok. Because we’re all Americans who want lower taxes.”

the hardest part of living in Portland is having your house burn down every single night and then having to rebuild it during the day. the amount of money i spend just in drywall is insane.

Trump: Portland is burning to the ground—insurrectionists all over the place. The politicians are afraid for their lives. That’s the only reason they say there’s nothing happening.

Kaleb’s memorial will be Thursday, October 9th at 2pm at Silver Lake Community Church in LA. We will have a private service in Bakersfield to inter him next to his grandparents, date TBD. If you can attend, it would be very meaningful to his loved ones.

Since Trump 2, several of the prominent “it’s not fascism” people have recanted publicly. The whole thing just strikes me as so stupid. I fail to see why we can’t use a handy term that covers at least like 99% of what is happening here right now.

Not sure if you’re aware, but there’s been a years-long debate among a certain group of academics and commentators about whether or not MAGA is fascist, with the “it’s not fascism” side arguing mainly that it lacks a popular base and therefore can’t be fascist.
