Oopsies, it turns out that the research that said we should all throw away our black plastic kitchen utensils had a math error that suggested they were dangerous when they aren't. 🧪 skepchick.org/2024/12/why-...

Saturn’s icy rings could be much older than they appear due to their resistance to pollution from impacts with rocky debris, according to a Nature Geoscience paper. The authors suggest that Saturn’s rings may be as old as the planet itself, challenging previous estimates of their age. 🧪 🔭
Pollution resistance of Saturn’s ring particles during micrometeoroid impact - Nature Geoscience
Simulations of micrometeoroid impacts into Saturn’s icy ring particles find limited pollution of the particles by non-icy material, suggesting Saturn’s rings may appear younger than their actual age.

Read this too quickly as "Agnostic tool use?" & by a cardinal, which would be a big story if done in the Vatican. But a bird using a pebble to hit his reflection? Also a big story, at least as a new type of tool use. 🧪🐦

I am a huge #AI advocate, but even I think this may be taking things too far.

Have we learned nothing from the way we rolled over for social media companies?

What would the UK government possibly have to gain from this?

“Governments are underestimating or ignoring the links between 5 key areas: biodiversity, water, food, health and climate change”

Agreed! Food production is the #1 global driver of terrestrial biodiversity loss and water use, the #2 driver of climate change, and diets are closely linked to health 🧪
IPBES report sees climate, nature and food challenges interlinked
A new approach is needed to tackle the interlinked crises afflicting the planet, scientists warn.

Remember that "mini-moon" found near Earth the other month?

Well, turns out it might have been a piece of the actual moon, the second such known object, hunting at a hidden population of lunar rocks in space.

Very cool study this! Story by me in New Scientist.

Earth had a temporary mini-moon that was a chunk of the real moon
An asteroid orbiting near our planet that temporarily became our second moon seems to have come from the actual moon, hinting that a hidden population of lunar rocks is drifting in space

Looking at this picture as a kid, I always wondered how the astronaut -- whose name I didn't know -- wasn't scared. A few years ago I got to ask Bruce McCandless about this picture! He said, in short, that NASA wouldn't let him enjoy the moment!
