this, even well removed from being an academic, is a big part of it, but it's also the same reason i leave siri turned off and see no value in alexa or anything. it's all just a skin over functions i could run myself with greater accuracy, relevancy, and fun unanticipated sprawl like wiki-holes
suspect a big reason why many academics and others who work in areas where getting facts RIGHT is key are disinterested in using LLMs for research:
they’ve tried it, they keep noticing major errors in output, and they conclude that having to verify all that doesn’t actually save them time.

a couple of years ago my local gas station got those hateful pumps that play ads at you, but they’ve never actually loaded ads into them, so instead they just play a video of whales with calming orchestral music. quite nice, really.
