More to the point, it seems that the authors of a paper should have final authority over what is said in a press release about their paper (including the release's title), regarding accuracy and interpretation.

An update: the press release has now been changed. There's no note to say that this happened, what changes were made, or when. This compounds the initial problem because anyone who relied on the initial quotes now looks like they misquoted the press release and authors.
