"They say they're coming to save us from some evil? They're talking about our neighbors who take care of us ... Alex was murdered while he was helping. Mr Rogers said look for the helpers, & right now the helpers have a target on our forehead ... Mr Rogers would be here right now too, so I'm here."

Walz: "To Americans who are watching this, I've got a question for you: What side do you want to be on? The side of an all powerful federal govt that can kill, injury, menace, & kidnap its citizens off the streets? Or on the side of a nurse at the VA hospital who died bearing witness to such govt?"

This is an excellent analogy, because my recollection from grade school is that the pen on the right looks fun and exciting, and then you play with it for a few minutes and realize it's not actually useful for anything and in fact makes some tasks more cumbersome, and never think about it again.
yeah, just out of interest, how many people choose the pen on the right for real work or art? See a lot of them in professional workplaces, do you?

Hell yeah applause on The View!
Mamdani: "I am in support of abolishing ICE. What we see is an entity that has no interest in fulfilling its stated reason to exist. We're seeing a government agency that is supposed to be enforcing some kind of immigration law, but instead what it's doing is terrorizing people."

Let’s go girls
Kākāpōs are no ordinary green birds. Not only are they astonishingly rare, but they also hold the title of the world’s heftiest parrot.

Now, fewer than 300 of them exist. That’s why conservationists are relieved that the flightless bird is breeding again. https://wapo.st/45LvsK3

Come the fuck on. Five hours later and the headline is still about a disputed shooting. Just a basic lack of courage to acknowledge the obvious.
If the headline is "disputed shooting" rather than straightforwardly telling the public what happened this rewards the DHS for lying about these events

There is a grave moral consequence to letting this go on. Shut down the government, have a general strike, grind the country to a halt, hit the streets. But not treating a demented administration lying about its thugs committing cold-blooded murder as an emergency? That is an emergency in itself.

Years ago, when I still wrote for SPIN, the great @danielkohn.bsky.social let me write about "A Long December", so of course I wrote a little about death and sadness and choosing to believe things can get better.

December is a month of traditions. A myriad religious observances, baked goods, decorations and familial obligations. We all have our conventions, taking time t

This season of The Morning Show honestly rocked. Cory Ellison’s arc paid off emotionally AND logically! There was hot sex and cold betrayal, opera, AI and gulags. Campy and cynical but also finger-wagging and earnest, like The Newsroom making out with Scandal

Rape is the distillation of the far-right worldview that Trump embodies: a gleefully sadistic act of domination carried out as fulfillment of a supposedly natural hierarchy. It would be weird if Trump wasn’t a rapist, given his ideological commitments—which is before you get to all the accusations.
i mean c’mon. the president’s best friend was the most notorious pedo in the country’s history who ran a massive child trafficking ring. every bit of circumstantial evidence we have says that trump was a participant. if this were a criminal trial we’d have enough evidence to compel a plea deal.

Incredible to watch MAGA influencers lecture us for calling Trump a fascist when he literally fired a U.S. Attorney for not prosecuting his political enemies. That’s the literal definition of fascism.

You can write this only if, by virtue of your income, identity, or both, you are utterly removed from the consequences of politics. To pretend that the racist, misogynistic, anti-gay vileness that Kirk spent his life spreading is secondary to the fact that he spread it "the right way" is appalling.

Sad news for theater fans: Richard Greenberg, whose plays were so funny, cutting, and elegantly structured, has died at 67. He was best known for Take Me Out, but so much from him is worth revisiting. He was one of those gay writers who viewed wit as a holy mission. He was more than up to the task.
