looks like the organizers overestimated the remaining appetite to watch Messi play there now that his club team swings through annually?
dallaninvictus.bsky.social
still enjoying this BTW, also delighted at the very positive cite for the work of a local academic of my unfortunately brief acquaintance
dallaninvictus.bsky.social
I'm reading Ada Palmer's INVENTING THE RENAISSANCE and there's an early section about how the War of the League of Cambrai just so utterly broke his expectations that Machiavelli had to reinvent political thought to account for it

all of which is to say I wonder if we aren't in a similar era today

it'll at least be a distraction from social media!

CK3: All Under Heaven, Football Manager 26, and Europa Universalis 5 all dropping within a week of each other is a conspiracy of sabotage against me, personally

my one remaining professional ambition is to make enough money to not blink at the cost of a Financial Times subscription

Does Canada have serious racism problems? Yes. Does Canada do a better job of building a society that integrates non-white immigrants than France does? Also yes.
techpriest.bsky.social
Anglo "live & let live" integration is demonstrably more successful than French style "aggressive assimilationism" at producing integrated societies, and has been proven to do so in multiple Anglo jurisdictions in (literally) multiple hemispheres! But these people want the thing with worse outcomes!

this is the skeleton key for so much annoyance I'm currently feeling with so many people I would otherwise agree with
bencates.bsky.social
That means that in order to durably expand your empathy in any real way you have to put up some internal roadblocks against indulging in cruelty *even when that cruelty is objectively harmless*. You kind of have to be a bit of a joyless scold here because that's one of only two stable equilibria.
dallaninvictus.bsky.social
as a lawyer, I disagree

orange flags are included in "at least a yellow flag", you're not disagreeing with Kai

we barely even got the cool parts of Mankind Divided, we just jumped straight to the bigotry

I am, despite myself, in awe

“bionic limb users are pretty uncommon so it’s okay to use slurs against them” oh ok got it, so we just live in deus fucking ex now

Something that got almost universally elided from Woke v1 is that being cruel is viscerally rewarding. It feels really good in a pre-rational sort of way. And, paired with the hedonic treadmill, the natural tendency is for any "safe" outlet for cruelty to erode whatever borders we place around it.
dallaninvictus.bsky.social
it probably won't be the actual amount, I'm assuming the Messi discount is pulling him in for less than a 4m offer from Iran

still: lol, and further, lmao

I hope they never change
dallaninvictus.bsky.social
the "presumably" and "probably" clauses in the quoted image are just Natural Intelligence hallucinations and I refuse to give them any more respect than their artificial equivalents
huwupy.kawaii.social
This is one of my favorite takes. I’m sure people would love a 30-day delay on having their images posted so they can be reviewed by hand and also it’s Good Actually to make humans look at some of the most heinous images in existence all day
The Bluesky Head of Trust & Safety admitting that all posted images are processed through an Al autolabeller that presumably employees have no access to or control over? (And probably steals every image to be used in an Al "art" generator, who knows?)
Seriously, this is outrageously irresponsible.

look I am entirely happy for Miami to be even worse defensively next year, so maybe I should shut up
dallaninvictus.bsky.social
while correct, I've watched enough Spurs to suspect that Reguilon is Not The Answer there either
dallaninvictus.bsky.social
well this makes them signing Reguilon for next year make way more sense, though as much as I love him I'm not sure he's much better as a defensive LB than 2025 Alba. There's a reason nobody has signed him in three months as a free agent!

meanwhile Suarez endures, the soccer gods are unjust

As soon as we find out what a market appropriate amount of money for them (and us) to make actually is then I'm right there with you

but the professional cartels have fingers on the scale and I'm not prepared to ignore them

as a bonus, if US doctors somehow stopped making as much money the financial pressures involved in staffing Canadian health care systems would massively decrease
tznkai.bsky.social
Scottish doctors make about half as much as US doctors, and until someone figures out how to get from here to there calling it a right isn't going to help.
Indeed showing an average base salary of 74,037 pounds per year for a physician salary in Scotland Indeed showing an average base salary of 217,122 dollars per year for a physician salary in United States PPP of the 74037 pounds being roughly 108,978.59 dollars in the US
dallaninvictus.bsky.social
well, maybe the tankies

But 100k is still a decent average salary from what I can tell, surely that doesn't count as immiseration?

We got too caught up in critiquing the failures and pointing out the wrinkles in liberal pluralism that we forgot to keep watering the plant we were pruning.

Yes, the world is more complicated than "diversity is so cool! All the colors are great, be nice to each other :)" but as a starting point is basically unimpeachable.
dallaninvictus.bsky.social
If you cannot make the emotional, social ,or technical adaptations required to cope with large scale social platforms, you should probably not be on large social platforms

Indeed, many people are not! You will live! I promise!

But you cannot turn a forest into a garden without destroying it
dallaninvictus.bsky.social
I am feeling more and more the tension between "the larger a social platform grows, the less control can be exerted and the less safe it can possibly be" and "network effects draw people to larger social platforms that then grow even larger"

even the best patrolled forest is still a forest
grizwald.bsky.social
As I suggested to Propter upthread, I think Bluesky regulars are probably reacting to the frustrating flipside of its sudden recent growth spurt: you cannot control the culture the same way, and you cannot moderate (formally or informally) the same way. Gardeners become game wardens.
dallaninvictus.bsky.social
"and I want ONE such places with everybody I want to talk to or yell at on it or reachable from it, because opening multiple apps is annoying

but it needs to be moderated strictly according to my specific ideological/emotional needs or I'll get very upset"

PLEASE just stick to group chats
joebaldwin.me.uk
"Everyone is twelve" theory also includes "I want a magic special place where I can publicly say whatever I want about whoever I want in as edgy a way as I want and never get banned but all the bad people I don't like are banned on sight and also I don't have to pay for it or trade anything for it"
dallaninvictus.bsky.social
Proportional could, perhaps, work out

The problem is that the scaling seems closer to exponential, or proportional to interactions rather than to users
dallaninvictus.bsky.social
Properly understanding "we need a strong <insert centre-right party here>" is my baseline test for "are your political observations worth taking seriously?" and so many people seem determined to publicly fail it for clout or, in the specific American case, because of unresolved mother wounds
merovingians.bsky.social
I don't think this has aged badly at all given that the utter collapse of the Republican Party and its model of governance in the face of Trump's nihilistic death cult has been catastrophic for this country.

a brief meditation on what we have lost in the Supreme Court of Canada's recent robe change
pwnallthethings.bsky.social
My favorite thing about the robes on the left is they look like Santa robes, and my second favorite thing about the robes on the left is *the justices and their clerks also called them "Santa robes"*
