The people he was hanging out with were engaged in a transaction, but as best as I can tell the transaction looks like trading his access to their fame and power for their access to his girls. Was anyone like "Here's a million bucks"? The idea they're all friends hanging out is part of the pretense.

I've heard stories about guys who can always show up with a gaggle of young women, and how they can use that "talent" to build astonishing amounts of influence, but as best as I can tell Epstein had more than influence: he was absolutely swimming in dough. Where was it from?

I sort of agree it doesn't feel like Epstein was blackmailing anyone, but still don't really understand where he was making all this money. He comes off as a subliterate lech almost singularly fixated on sex, not exactly a wise financial hand. His role explicitly seemed to be "the guy with girls."
Last week the far right started peddling a narrative that the outrage over Epstein is a moral panic. Today, like clockwork, a more polite version of that narrative appears in the Atlantic.

The *best version* of the Epstein scandal is that a wide swathe of American elites was palling around with a known child predator and explicit eugenicist for years on end — and is now closing ranks to downplay the severity of his crimes and their own complicity.

Yet another in the "Everything is Gender".

As Ellie notes, a game can be right-coded in its themes and gameplay, but if there is a non-cishet-white male lead (or even just major non-romance character), it's almost automatically considered left-coded.
was talking in a Discord about the political valences of video games, and observed that at least in the fandoms I was broadly part of, for the past 20 years "what are the politics of this game" has in practice reduced to "what are the gender politics of this game" and literally nothing else

The lead dev is an edgy dickhead who’s somewhat right-leaning, but above all he’s a *contrarian* edgy dickhead, which produced some extremely funny results in this case (the best-written MLM relationship in game history)

The shit I see on here does not speak to that anxiety.

It speaks to contempt for people who actually put their lives, freedom, and future on the line for the sake of preserving the same for others.

I will admit in the last months I have really been struggling with the fact that years of doing this and the simple forward motion of time means I do not have the capacity for the real goon shit anymore, but I have been buoyed by seeing so many people able to do the work.

The people of Minneapolis have performed in a way all of us should aspire to. It is a beautiful, awe-inspiring moment. One to learn from.

That they are subject to the complaints and meddling of a bunch of nerds on the computer desperate to be the "vanguard" or whatever is fucking pathetic.

Ubisoft is probably the most "nothing we do means anything" of any games studio. Like, I don't think that's *good* but man, trying to parse anything they do is a fool's errand.
