for the record, if you reply to my posts expressing that you think that maybe Trump is an invincible mastermind who can get away with anything, and I don't know you, I'll probably block

I'm gonna pin this so also, for the record, if I don't follow you, please do not take that personally

Python 3.14 is out today! Here are my notes on the new release: simonwillison.net/2025/Oct/8/p...

If you're an open source library maintainer who supports all current Python releases this also means you can drop 3.9 support now and start depending on features from 3.10, like match/case
Python 3.14
This year's major Python version, Python 3.14, just made its first stable release! As usual the what's new in Python 3.14 document is the best place to get familiar with …

I'm someone who wears a very high-tech hearing aid in order to understand literally any spoken conversation at all. On top of that, I *still* need to use speech-to-text transcription (which uses machine learning) to caption about 50% of conversations.

I've jokingly referred to myself as a cyborg,

They are using made-up slurs to be gleefully ableist against a disabled girl, using the excuse that it's "just" a joke & "just" mocking AI techbros. But what they are in fact doing is inventing fun new ways to direct derogatory language at a stigmatized group: disabled people who need adaptive tech.

as have many people who wear hearing aids, have had joints replaced, have pacemakers, use insulin pumps, or have artificial limbs.

Autistic people are also often called "robotic."

Someone who makes up a slur for robots and turns it on us is being wildly, viciously ableist.

Oregon Governor Tina Kotek just took back control of the national guard.

She is sending the Oregon national Guard back home and is directing the California national guard to leave the State.

my mental model is basically that we have 'ruts' in the roads of our thinking. (Neurons that fire together, wire together)

It's dangerous to set and reinforce certain patterns.

The dream did a bunch of weird leaping between “this is me understanding context I was shielded from as a kid” and ” this is me writing about this in the future,“ and there was an interlude where kid me in the flashback got high on space drugs
eleanor.lockhart.contact
The plot was that when I was a kid, my dad took me to the monoliths from 2001, on a space cruise ship, and the plot of 2010 the movie happened. This was not the focus of the dream, the focus was that the crew of the cruise ship was killing gay people and my dad knew about it

okay but I don't understand how this is supposed to remain unknown once this is in widespread use. We're not talking about how to make FOGBANK here, this is going to be something accessible to anyone with a couple grand to throw at computer equipment; this secret has a shelf life of maybe a year

That means that in order to durably expand your empathy in any real way you have to put up some internal roadblocks against indulging in cruelty *even when that cruelty is objectively harmless*. You kind of have to be a bit of a joyless scold here because that's one of only two stable equilibria.
eleanor.lockhart.contact
yeah. People desperately want to be able to be cruel in “acceptable” contexts, so they feel strong when they’re powerless elsewhere. i get it, I also have this impulse, but it‘s toxic

Something that got almost universally elided from Woke v1 is that being cruel is viscerally rewarding. It feels really good in a pre-rational sort of way. And, paired with the hedonic treadmill, the natural tendency is for any "safe" outlet for cruelty to erode whatever borders we place around it.

I hope I don’t have another dream like I did last night about being trapped on a space cruise ship with bigoted fundamentalists and my dad

It is twitter-assed (and now the prevailing mode on the bad website) and even defensive cruelty (a mode long familiar to a lot of people on this website) is corrosive.

They really do not think of us as human. They just don't. We aren't the same as them in their eyes, so we're easy to torture, abuse, and when they can do it w/o consequence, kill.

Gonna be thinking about this lede for a minute.
(RNS) — Last month, the Rev. David Black stood in front of a Chicago-area U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility and spread his arms wide. Adorned in all black and wearing a clerical collar, the pastor looked up at a group of masked, heavily armed ICE agents on the roof and began to pray.

“I invited them to repentance,” Black, a minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), said in an interview. “I basically offered an altar call. I invited them to come and receive that salvation, and be part of the kingdom that is coming.”

But when Black began to lower his arms a few seconds later, the agents responded to his spiritual plea by firing pepper balls, or chemical agents that cause eye irritation and respiratory distress, video footage shows. One struck Black in the head, exploding into a puff of white pepper smoke and forcing him to his knees. Fellow demonstrators rushed to his aid, and as the pastor rubbed his face in pain, the agents continued to fire.

“We could hear them laughing,” Black said.

The best version of this is when they post the screenshot like it's self-evident you should disagree, somebody retweets it sarcastically, knowing the context, and you accidentally like it earnestly. Sometimes you even catch the quick follow into block out of it.

it is sort of funny when people try and do social pressure stuff for extremely marginal opinions. like "oh hey looks like you posted that you enjoy going outside. don't worry, I already screenshotted it so everyone will know 😘"
