New year new games thread, 2026 time.
No More Heroes still reaches “great” though. Not as great as Killer7 but still good enough to apply and it came later, so I think that would still be the answer?

Probably not "fun" because there are definitely games where fun is very much not the point, but... Maybe the presumption that it will be recreational?

i think that this is part of what makes a game fun but isn't necessarily what makes something a game. but also, to shitpost: a game is a set of rules with interactivity and player input at some stage.

I think one of the rules needs to be a terminal state. If it only ends when you decide for it to end that's not really enough for me. Even if ending is just "you ran out of lives", my brain needs a point that says "okay I have Completed one unit of Game."

Even ones that do have some inherent goal like Minecraft where there is an actual end boss just don't work for me because there's not enough pushing me towards that for the long term.

I really enjoyed Dragon Quest Builders in part because it does have a lot more short term goals on the way.

This is likely why I have a lot of trouble with open-ended "make your own fun" sandbox games, because the lack of extrinsic motivation there makes it hard for me to stay engaged.
February 10, 2026 at 4:26 PM
Like, to me personally, part of what makes a game a game is win/loss conditions. If you don't have that you're still engaging in the act of playing but play encompasses things that aren't just games.

This definition rules out a lot of things generally considered games and that's interesting!

Interesting conversation on Discord today about what is a game?

Not in the shitty online argument "This game isn't really a game" nonsense but just more fundamentally, what are the minimum components to make something a game, generally?

It’s a real shame this is free to play and therefore probably gacha hell shit because I vibe extremely hard with this style. Pirate marionettes you say? Hell yeah I’m down.

Well it *might* mean that. It might also just mean stuff like "you've had the account over 5 years, you're supposed to be 13 to register at all, therefore we assume 18" or something.

Weird, it doesn't seem to be paywalled for me? But anyway here's the relevant bit.

Isn't this what they already said from announcement? The original article said they were going to try to limit who actually had to deal with it, it just didn't go into specifics much.
Discord is already starting to walk things back a little, so people should keep doing what they're doing (cancel Nitro, leave feedback/criticism, direct contact through support tickets/phone/email/etc)

The thing about Massie is that he actually believes something, and even if those beliefs are almost all stupid, believing anything at all means you wind up on Team Good Guy at least SOMETIMES in our current environment.

As much as they're not my jam I kind of hope that the recent surge in "cozy" stuff is a sign that culture as a whole is moving back towards more optimism. A large part of... all of this is that we as a society just kind of stopped thinking that the future could be good at all.
February 10, 2026 at 4:41 AM
This was prompted by a thing I just saw that said House of the Dead was copaganda. Like, the arcade game.
February 10, 2026 at 2:33 AM
At this point I think the term "Copaganda" is joining terms like "Mary Sue" where whatever salient point was being addressed is gone because it seems to just mean "a cop exists in this media and is not instantly evil" which makes it functionally useless.

I would probably not introduce the “no you have to listen to the Gestapo” bill heading into an election where you’re about to get shellacked while people are furious about said gestapo but what do I know I’m just a Democrat
