Who am I? Well, I'm best known for curating horrible code and awful IT workplace stories at TheDailyWtf.com. By day, I write software for moon landers, and worked on the (sadly, failed) Peregrine mission, and work on the Griffin mission. My interests are endless. Think of me as your weird uncle.

There are two ways to get people to trust you. The first is by being predictable and consistent and building a track record out of that. The second is relying on people’s ignorance. If they don’t understand you or what you’re doing or the system you’re engaging with, you can gain trust by force.

KUWAIT CITY — There are times when the sheer ignorance and ingratitude of the American public makes you sick. This week marks the 150th anniversary of Sherman’s March from Atlanta to the Sea, which...

Intruder in the Dust is one hell of a southern noir flick from 1949. Just uh… it’s a movie about race in Mississippi in the 1940s- you’re gonna hear the n-word a LOT. But one of the heroes of the film is an old lady who keeps a lynch mob at bay by doing her mending and refusing to budge.

Absolutely. The reason this is bad is because you cannot guarantee that all the drivers in adjacent lanes are going to honor your granting of the ROW. Someone could safely pass in front of you only to be struck by the driver next to you.
Drivers: I know you think you’re doing cyclists a favour by stopping & waving us through an intersection while you’ve got right of way, but you really aren’t. You’re being unpredictable and screwing up the flow of traffic for everyone and just causing further delays for us to safely cross. Stop it.

I gave one of my cats a year off from vaccines, but that was only because he'd just recovered from FIP and his immune system needed a break after the hundreds of milliliters of grey-market antivirals we needed to treat it.

Computers were a skill. They were taught in classrooms as a skill. Skills give you power over your tools because you work them as an expert and that is leverage to multiply externally.

And then computers became an A/B tested telemetry-based advertising conduit to brains for SaaS recurring revenue.

There are definitely several playlists for when It Happens, right?
"Of course, it doesn’t feel right to want IT to HAPPEN. And it’s obviously not okay to try to make IT HAPPEN. That’s not what this is ABOUT, just to make things CLEAR LEGALLY as far as VARIOUS AGENCIES are concerned."

This sounds reasonable but is 100% wrong. Whether you or agree or disagree with a study is completely immaterial. What matters is whether the study was conducted properly and generates valid results. And it's impolitic to say but it's true: you have to have some level of expertise to judge that.
JD Vance: "Science as practiced in its best form is that if you disagree with it, then you ought to criticize it and you ought to argue against it."

Generalized contempt? I have highly specific contempt for this asshole.
"[B]rooding but not particularly thoughtful. Fetterman offers generalized contempt instead of pointed arguments ... A preoccupation with tough-guy masculinity ... Not especially long, but it starts to feel interminable."
