The only half decent segment in V/H/S Halloween is Paco Plaza's neatly structured Ut Supra Sic Infra, which does interesting stuff with the format. Everything else is pretty much a mess. I was very disappointed to see Alex Ross Perry, whose films I've enjoyed, make something as sloppy as KitPrint.

Finished reading this yesterday and loved it. A haunting, unpleasant fable with some serious ick factor. Reminded me a great deal of work by Priya Sharma and T. Kingfisher. Comes out next year from Titan.

Oct 6th 1988 - Students discovered that school was closed due to flooding. Flooding which Donnie Darko caused, while under the influence of Frank.

📽️📅 Donnie Darko (2001)
3 Screenshots from the movie "Donnie Darko" (2001): First, a dimly lit scene shows a young man with an intense expression, holding an axe over his shoulder, with a mysterious, blurred figure in the background. Second, a black screen with white text reads "October 6 1988 (twenty-four days remain)." Third, a group of school children walks outside, with one smiling, as subtitles read "The school is closed today because it's flooded," and a Halloween-themed sign is visible in the background.

I’ll never get over the power of word-of-mouth, the ability to spread stories from one reader to the next purely by sharing… Thank you, Matt, for helping spread the word

3. Clay McLeod Chapman

Clay writes some of the best horror focused on grief and loss. His short stories are amazing and somehow he packs so much plot into them that they feel like novels.

Starting point:Ghost Eaters, Whisper Down The Lane, Kill Your Darling

no no the publishing industry is doing fine, why do you ask

Jennifer L. Armentrout and Hellmann's
In a promotion designed for BookTok enjoyment, Jennifer L. Armentrout’s just-published THE PRIMAL OF BLOOD AND BONE is available in a special, limited-edition "garlic-scented copy, infused with Hellmann’s Garlic Aioli to create a one-of-a-kind, Craven-proof book." They explain: "This exclusive edition is printed with garlic-infused ink, designed to ward off Armentrout’s bloodthirsty monsters, the Craven. While humans may dread garlic breath, Hellmann’s has cleverly transformed this social faux pas into an unexpected – and delicious – form of supernatural protection."

IIRC the series was meant to be an anthology series, but after the first one took off the way it did, they were forced to make a direct sequel before getting back on track and making an unrelated standalone horror under the Halloween banner.

Well, I've been on this solo retreat now for three days and I've managed to write over 10,000 words which feels amazing.

The novel is now at 50k, and I'm not near the end at all yet, but I'm over halfway, and at 50k words, this thing is now legitimately a novel, which is something to be proud of.
A laptop screen with the word count reading 50,008 words. Woo.

Good morning Womble! I'm currently reading HEX HOUSE by Amy Jane Stewart.
A photo of an advanced reader copy of Hex House. Its cover shows a house hidden in the woods in shades of teal and green, and orange silhouettes of birds. It's all very autumnal. The book has been laid on an autumnal-coloured silk scarf and surrounded by witchy accoutrements such as runes, antlers, small glass bottles, crystals and tiny bones.

If a publisher won't commit to human editing, art and translation, the deal is not worth having. They're signalling how little they care about the final product, which comes with your name attached. This is the right place to push back. Having an agent here helps.

I suspect new authors will have a hard time getting such a deal.
