Today is a day when arts degrees are worthless, but the product of those degrees is so valuable it would kill an entire industry if they were made to pay for it.

I love living in a city full of immigrants and tons and tons of people who are not at all like me and not like each other. It makes us all better and it makes our city better. I know I’m preaching to the choir by saying this on the lib app but I sometimes just get so overwhelmed by how special it is

Yes! I do something similar as a Google form because for some reason, I like filling them out more than I do spreadsheets.

Guys this violates the first rule of climate discourse, which is:

If you're gonna compare an impact to the pollution of a half million cars, and not propose reducing the number of cars by that amount, you are a handmaiden for Ford's F150 fall sales special.

"Equal to a half million cars"

The people who are most vulnerable to the hard-to-breathe air that comes with climate change may inadvertently be adding to the problem, new research finds. https://cnn.it/4pWQMoh

Ahh his book where it rains all afternoon is so gorgeous, too! One of the first mostly wordless picture books I remember loving.

During a shutdown, the federal government can deploy troops to invade US cities but can’t send WIC funds to states to feed infants and children. Speaks volumes about how the rules around shutdowns systematically serve GOP priorities while harming everyone else.

I have joked before that the fundamental difference between administrators and faculty is that administrators think that work gets done at meetings and faculty think that meetings produce work that will eventually need to be done.

The collapse of local news is one of the features of our media landscape. I know there are people swimming upstream against it, but it's a big problem. Social media can't make up for it.

The @washingtonpost.com should be doing daily stories about the regular people in DC who are getting detained and deported. The impact on their families. The tears in the fabric of the local community.

you can often tell the fake academic freedom/free speech heroes from the real ones because when asked to think of ways to defend freedom, the fake ones don’t generally think of unions, and in fact often blame them. wrongo!!

Social media, meaning the spaces for people to meet and socialize globally, has been dead for possibly 10 years already.

What we have now is parasocial media: a form of mass media where there’s illusion of relationships covering a high virality broadcast tool controlled by algorithms.

I really did think “surely the big business republicans whose corporate overlords are getting fucked by these policies will be SOME sort of guardrail against SOME tiny slice of this” and like ….. we aren’t really seeing that the way I assumed we would

It’s honestly shocking to me that tech has effectively rolled over and accepted it now costs $100K to hire a foreign worker.

The degree of capitulation during his second presidency has been quite stunning.

OpenAI is essentially a social arsonist, developing and releasing tools that hyper scale the most racist, misogynistic, and toxic elements of society, lowering the barriers for all manner of abuse. The so called guardrails make a pinky swear look like an ironclad contract.
This social app can put your face into fake movie scenes, memes and arrest videos
The new Sora social app from ChatGPT maker OpenAI encourages users to upload video of their face so their likeness can be put into AI-generated clips.

University presidents it’s time for a united front. I mean, it’s past time. What are you going to do.
From the NYT: “The White House on Wednesday sent letters to nine of the nation's top public and private universities, urging campus leaders to pledge support for President Trump's political agenda to help ensure access to federal research funds.”

The federal surge didn’t end in DC.

It became entrenched. ICE is still riding with MPD. We have “local control” back & people are still being detained & deported. National Guard is still here with long guns pacing our streets.

ICE had made only 85 arrests in Washington from Jan. 20 through the end of July. But from early August until mid-September, ICE made around 1,200 arrests, according to officials with knowledge of the data.

We detail how that happened:

Some problems have simple solutions. This new “Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education” is one. The answer is simply saying no.

Simple does not mean easy. But Brown, Dartmouth, MIT, Vanderbilt, Univ of AZ, UPenn, USC, UT Austin & UVA must understand what they’ll lose if they sign on.

inbox, from Democratic Assembly nominee Katie Brennan (LD-32, Jersey City/Hoboken): Brennan Calls for New Jersey to Withhold Federal Taxes, Seize Trump’s Bedminster Golf Course After Gateway Tunnel Funding Freeze
"This is not how the government is supposed to work. We pay federal taxes but get a President who sees us as the enemy and takes away our own money as retaliation.
This has to stop.
"Donald Trump has shown again and again that he is unfit to lead this country. When he's not too busy golfing, he's doing active harm, whether it's sending masked troops into cities or shutting down vital infrastructure projects like this.
"These funds were already approved. And if people can't cross the Hudson to get to work, it will literally destroy our economy.
"We have to show Trump that this isn't okay.
"Yes, New Jersey should sue the Trump administration, but we have to do more. We should be withholding federal taxes, dollar for dollar, to backfill funding that's illegally cut.
The state should also eminent domain
Trump's golf course in Bedminster and build some affordable housing there instead. If the federal government won't stand up for New Jersey, Trenton should."
