while industry figures, dressed to the nines, filtered into LA's peacock theater last week, protesters chanted "the industry is dead" outside of it. despite how often geoff keighley says the game awards exist to "celebrate" games and the people who make them, many feel ignored

Some present had direct personal experience with the video game industry’s current layoff-centric strategy. Earlier this year, Timothy Staton-Davis, who attended the protest dressed in a grim reaper cloak and holding a plastic scythe, was part of a small round of layoffs at Brass Lion Entertainment, which is currently working on Wu-Tang: Rise Of The Deceiver.
“There were a few of us they had to let go of because of monetary issues,” Staton-Davis told Aftermath. “It’s their first game. They’re trying to pull through. They’ve been negatively affected by the current industry situation in a lot of ways because of mismanagement of money. It’s not the studio’s fault, but from our partners and all that kind of stuff.”

You ever notice how my spelling/Grammer has gotten worse over the last few years? This is why, i have bad dyslexia, and these spell checks used to be a life line. Now it's just making it worse. To the point i'm just having to check everything manually.
Also on "well isn't *spell checking* AI???" smug arguments: Every spell checker on every software I use to write has gotten worse and stupid as more and more ML features have been added. It literally cannot do better than a simple strict check for words not in a dictionary.

Larian's CEO says they "don't see it as a replacement for developers". How?? If you're using AI to generate ANY artwork, even internally, that's replacing human labour. You can't claim to not be replacing anyone when you're using a tool that's literally doing the work of an artist. Gross.

Larian's horrible hirring process is an open secret in the industry – insane amounts of unpaid work in "writing tests", excessive numbers of interviews, months and months of back and forth, etc. Everyone in games narrative circles has heard the stories at this point, probably from multiple people.
I know this because they tried to recruit me and I strongly considered it but they’re also a “do an unpaid writing test where you have to also make it playable” company so that’s not something I vibe with

You really can't minimize the use of genAI without shitting on the labor you are replacing with it.

This! The whole entire POINT of looking at reference is to get a real idea of what something ACTUALLY looks like, so you can stylize and interpret it! Looking at a statistical average spat out by an LLM with god knows what in the dataset is NOT the same as observing reality!
The thing that makes me insane about this and Vincke’s comments is why would you trust AI to make a reference? They’re notoriously bad at doing that and produce banal results! Go buy some art books, they’re great. How is it empowering concept artists to have them not do that?
