How did we end up in a world where ICE agents are indistinguishable from the Proud Boys who stormed the Capitol on January 6?

VIGILANTE NATION tells the story of the insidious state laws behind MAGA's return to power, and it's out in paperback today.

My left hand holding a paperback copy of Vigilante Nation in front of a bookcase.

The cover reads:

"The electrifying story of American democracy and its enemies" -- U.S. Congressman Jamie Raskin

How State-Sponsor3ed Terror Threatens Our Democracy

“.. On Sept. 20, Trump meant to send a private message to Attorney General Pam Bondi urging her to prosecute” Comey.

“.. Trump believed he had sent Bondi the message directly .. and was surprised to learn it was public, the officials said.” 🤡

I found this very helpful in understanding what President Miller is trying to do in connection with the National Guard deployments and potential invocation of the Insurrection Act.
aselrod.bsky.social
“Miller is working overtime to polarize the public debate about Trump's increasingly dictatorial abuses of power…He relentlessly depicts Democrats as allied with a vast, inchoate class of violent criminals and insurrectionists…” sharp read of what Stephen Miller wants from @gregsargent.bsky.social
gregsargent.bsky.social
JB Pritzker and Gavin Newsom are doing something new and important: They understand Stephen Miller's theory of fascist power politics, and they've developed a theory on how to combat it. More Dems need to reckon with Miller's understanding of the moment.

New from me:

The elimination of USAID is a moral atrocity and all involved made a choice to enable, and then lie about, ending the lives of some of the most vulnerable people in the world.
MAE SOT, Thailand (AP) - Mohammed Taher clutched the lifeless body of his 2-year-old son and wept. Ever since his family's food rations stopped arriving at their internment camp in Myanmar in April, the father had watched helplessly as his once-vibrant baby boy weakened, suffering from diarrhea and begging for food.
On May 21, exactly two weeks after Taher's little boy died, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio sat before Congress and declared: "No one has died" because of his government's decision to gut its foreign aid program. Rubio also insisted: "No children are dying on my watch."
That, Taher says, "is a lie."

if you post something like “thats just life in the TURD reich” under strangers’ unrelated posts, a band of 12 oompa loompas armed with assault weapons should immediately halo jump into the top of your house

As basic question from an ex-police reporter: Can some of our journalists detail the training regimen all these new federal agents receive? The lethal incompetence involving use of force and perameters of the 4A suggests they are just handed guns, masks and badges and told to go fuck people up.

ICE is made up of men who have failed the human test and have nothing of value to offer this nation.

Adults with decency and options and possibilities don’t do this shit.

One thing to understand about what's happening now is that on Oct 1, the deportation machine's budget increased dramatically: $170 billion in NEW funding, averaging to $42.5 billion per year. That's just below the Israeli military's annual budget. It's the equivalent of 13th biggest army on earth.

As federal agents kill and use extreme force in Chicago, their budget surges.

We should probably think of CBS News as if it were one of those once well-known brands that has been passed around in a series of corporate transactions which now produces cheap crap and slaps the old logo on it.

NEW inside CBS—

Staff are insulted executives will spend $150 million to buy The Free Press & make self-proclaimed “Zionist fanatic” Bari Weiss Editor-in-Chief, while many of them are set to be laid off.

“If I wrote 90 percent of what’s on The Free Press, I would get flagged and fired,” one says.
‘What the F**k?’ CBS News Insiders Prepare for Takeover by Self-Described ‘Zionist Fanatic’
Bari Weiss is expected to be announced as editor-in-chief of CBS News, as employees worry her new role will bring a pro-Israel bias, more censorship, and lower editorial standards.

Sarah Harris is of course a major exception and I'm with you on people not thinking elites of her stripe would be so committed to the administration program.

The authoritarian immigration stuff is largely the work of Stephen Miller's office in the White House and DHS. The lawyers doing that work are, for the most part, low-intelligence chuds. (See my running joke about this administration being the Bad Legal Takes account with the power of arrest.)
david.noll.org
I'm not sure if I'm with you. The sabotage of the administrative state is being led by Vought/DOGE, and to the extent there are lawyers there, they seem largely to be hacks who aren't that connected in the professional world.

So I spend a lot of time with these people and I guess I don't think they have any special expertise in how quickly constitutional regimes can shift. The few who do work in comparative conlaw. Thre are just a handful of them in the legal academy and they're largely unrepresented in the profession.

My hypothesis is that the electorate is fundamentally backward looking. Because law sort of constrained Trump during his first administration, people thought they'd get the same thing again.
