More than anything else classism is that if you lose your company half a million you get fired, but if Zuck loses Meta 77 billion he gets paid $28 million.

Meritocracy doesn't fail due to DEI, if fails becaues we can't ever let a rich nimrod suffer consequences for any level of screwup.
Mark Zuckerberg’s gamble on the "Metaverse" has lost his company more than $77 billion.

Same survey says that more than a third of Republicans believe the moon landing was faked, including more than half of Republican men under 50. Conspiracism in the GOP is a huge problem but those numbers seem *really* high and I hope they're wrong! manhattan.institute/article/the-...

What makes this story about cats in China really fascinating to me is not JUST that leopard cats were there before house cats were. People changed the environment and they arrived.

But what's wild to me is that they left...and they left BECAUSE OF PEOPLE. www.sciencenews.org/article/dna-...
Ancient DNA reveals China’s first 'pet' cat wasn’t the house cat
The modern house cat reached China in the 8th century. Before that, another cat — the leopard cat — hunted the rodents in ancient Chinese settlements.

It'll be an interesting experiment. If I get around to insulating the crawlspace so my floors aren't so icy cold, will the kittens still be so intent on sitting on my lap while I try to write?
December 3, 2025 at 2:55 PM
Update: as kittens get larger, older, but still squirmy in one's lap, typo rate seems to go up. A correlation at this moment, will update on findings.

C-SPAN caller says he'd be against attacks on Mexico (when the host pointed out most fentanyl comes from there), but would be for attacks on the cartels in Mexico. IANAL but this seems to bring up interesting questions about sovereignty.

I'd posit that a "genius" would interrogate random data sources, especially ones that trigger confirmation bias.
Elon Musk appears to be worried about white people’s fertility specifically. Also, he claims Jewish people - who look white to him- are white based on what he sees as skin color.

No-strings-attached, zero-means-testing, no-questions-asked cash payouts have been proven, over and over again, to be the most effective form of charity/aid going.

It gets people in housing, and it saves the state money. We know this. It's fact, not theory.
An Oregon pilot program giving cash to homeless youths sees a staggering reduction in homelessness. The program gave participants $1,000 cash payments each month for two years, and at the end of the project's first phase, 91% of participants reported being in stable housing.

Kittens make you think their species are great explorers of cause and effect, the way they try everything, like if they whack this, it'll fall over.

Cats prove to you that they don't actually care about cause and effect, like when they whack this and it falls over.

The creamsicle kitten is usually more quiet and second fiddle to the more pushy tabby kitten, but when she goes nuts (current toy: wadded up sticky note), she goes harrrrd

"So why don't you just tell everyone the best thing to do? Seems like this job is no work."
What’s the worst question someone can ask after you tell them your profession? For linguists, it’s definitely “how many languages do you speak?”, but I’m curious what else is happening to the rest of y’all out there?!

A shoddy Oklahoma University essay went viral. Cis people think this is about conservatives whining for better grades. Trans people see a planned attack on a trans academic. (Note for free subscriber...

Hot take: We need to be careful how we criticize these awful LLM-generated dubs on Amazon and other places. The companies can always spend more money and energy (literally) to refine them, so criticizing quality incentivizes them to do more. Better: argue humans are good at this and pay artists.
