If you live downwind of a large concentration of birds or cattle, it's time to start thinking about how you will protect yourself if there's an outbreak of bird flu among them.

And how you will know when it happens.

"As soon as these results came back, the patient was placed in a negative pressure room and her medical team put on N95 respirators"

Why not wear N95s from the start?

I am a climate scientist and this is correct ⬇️
Occasional reminder that there’s no, “it’s too late, its over” for anthropogenic climate change. Every molecule of CO2 that doesn’t go into the atmosphere makes a difference. Preventing 0.1 degree of warming makes a difference. Every bit of climate resilience we build together makes a difference.

CW stats for violence against women
Is 2024 Australia's worst year yet for violence against women?
-it's not "an epidemic". It's ENDEMIC to Australia, and that's the problem. Stop making this seem like a surprise.
Every.
Single.
Time.
The surprise is the lack of political anger at it. From anywhere.

What happens in China never just stays in China. There is a surge in influenza A in the U.S. as well this winter. We rarely test whether the virus is conventional flu, or H1N1 swine flu, H5N1 bird flu. But the crowded ERs seen in many places are indications something is afoot. 🧵

Where did we go wrong? Allowing a little ol' virus that carries the hallmark of a chronic HIV infection to successfully prey upon the emotions, biases, and prejudices of an untold that resulted in an emotional response so strong that it prevented the scientific response we were deserving of.
On normalization of infectious disease: "What we have done is take something that should never have established itself in human communities in the first place and have built a public health consensus around the concept of repeated mass infection. So, yes, this is what failure looks like."

The authors of the journal article on the 13-year-old with #birdflu in BC are trying to make a point by saying that the kid is unhealthy (BMI over 35 & slight asthma).

If that's all it takes for #H5N1 to require life support to survive, then we're screwed.
