My column this week. Alabamians often dismiss the bile that comes out of some of our leaders' mouths as performative, or grimly funny. Don't do that with Tommy Tuberville's recent threats against Muslims. He's already signaled that he views many Alabamians as dangers, simply for who they are.

The @nytimes.com spent weeks on that story because their leadership fundamentally agreed with Chris Rufo that it was insulting that a Black woman led Harvard. We're all supposed to pretend that's not obviously the case, but c'mon. Let's not be stupider than we have to be.
it is actually maddening to go back and look at the amount of front-page space the NYT dedicated to this 'scandal'.
They got Claudine Gay out of the Harvard presidency over a footnote.

The mainstream press viewpoint is that no one mainstream is racist, and therefore, as ideas approach the mainstream, they become less racist
i do not think the mainstream press is equipped or capable of covering ideological white nationalists and eugenicists as such, or even capable of noting that this is what they are. it is related to the wide belief that racism is simply a matter of manners.

This racist conspiracy has been mainstream opinion within the U.S. Right since the early 21st century. It comes out of Islamophobic response to 9/11 and has been propagated by pseudo-intellectuals like Bruce Bawer and Christopher Caldwell, who are broadly embraced by centrist media and think tanks.

Part of the problem with some of these "smart guys" (referring to folks like Thompson) is that they adopt erroneous right-wing talking points to critique right-wingers.
I know it's a right-wing, anti-DEI talking point, but do regular people think this? That DEI offices were auditing faculty syllabi and ordering them what to teach? Maybe I'm naive, but that level of detailed attention and oversight sounds far-fetched to me from any higher ed admin unit.

One of my best friends is from a sleepy, wealthy small town in the south-west of Germany. He said, so many of my parents’ neighbours are rich and bored, with little to complain about, and they’ve radicalised themselves at dinner parties and online. In their aimlessness, they’ve bonded over hate.
This isn’t some rant saying “Germany has learned nothing from its past” - the reality is more subtle than that. Middle-class Germans live and travel with an incredible amount of ease and comfort, and they just got…sleepy. Many of them dismissed the far-right’s rage as just another set of complaints.
